His 4:10.98 is technically the state record although Cole Sprout ran 4:07 in a time trial in April. I know his 1,500 pb ended up being at least 3:39. Struggled with alcohol addiction for quite some time.

Richie ran 1:47 and 3:39 and was 5th in the 1988 Olympic Trials 1500m. RIP.
I think actually Cruz Culpepper officially broke that 4:10.98 mark this year running with the Joe Bosshard group in a race where a bunch of the pros were trying to break 4 on CO soil. Cruz ran 4:08.
Martinez's mark was fearsome, though. Amazing how long it stood.
Someone had revived a 9 year old thread about this to mention his passing yesterday. The original thread was a story about his 1988 olympic trials and other posters were responding to it really thoughtfully from what I saw. The link to it is now dead though. Anyone know the story or have a new link?
He seemed like he touched a lot of people in some way. RIP

It's amazing how many runners through the years didn't break it considering the quality runners that come out of Colorado each year.
cruz cullpepper ofically broke the record running 4:08 this past summer.
Here is a bit more detailed obituary:

yeah. it's been in danger many, many times.
cole sprout ran within one tenth of a second in a race as a junior, but then quadrupled at state so he didn't really go as hard as he could that year. cruz culpepper and michael mooney were both within 1 second as well. plenty of others got into that 4:11-12 range. cruz did break it this year, however. ran 4:08 for the full mile in an official race -- 4:07.36 equivalent for 1600m.
but 4:10 is pretty tough at altitude -- cruz ran 4:00 indoors at sealevel and only managed 4:07 (although there was wind). but it basically takes a 4:05 1600m runner (sealevel) to do it, and while there are some CO runners that are that fast, generally when they are trying to run for time they are going down to a big sealevel meet. there are no huge meets looking for fast times that are held at altitude.
What did Luff '86 run? I thought he was 4:10 also

Not a CHSAA-sanctioned meet. Therefore, not officially a record.
Somebody keeping track of 'record's at non-standard non-events - i.e. 1600m - is news to me. Neither WA, USATF, nor T&FN does. Has Lord Coe ever quoted a 1600 PR? No, he hasn't. He doesn't have one. He's never entered a race over this distance.
Where do you live? Nearly every State High School Association or Union maintains a 1600 meter record.
Why start a thread for one person who died. 3 million Americans will die this year. Why is this one more important to you than the others?
