The finishing order of Grijalva, Teare and Hunter matches the order of how smooth their form is. Grijalva looks like he's barely touching the ground

I think comparing him to the top Americans makes way more sense. The average age that they ran their PR is 28. Many of these guys were running 13:30 at his age and they ended up breaking 13 5 years later.
Lagat 12:53 at 37
Solinsky 12:55 at 25
Rupp 12:58 at 26
Ritz 12:56 at 26
Chelimo 12:57 at 27
Kinkaid 12:56 at 26
Kennedy 12:58 at 25
Lomong 12:58 at 35
So you are saying there was only 1?

Fantastic result for Grijalva and Teare.
Decent result for Hunter - PR and respectable time. However, I believe that at this point, there is cause for concern regarding his kick.
Looking back at the 2016 Olympic Trials 5k, the top 8 finishers all closed in 57 or faster, with Lagat closing in 52 for the win. (Mead and Chelimo closed in 53 for the other 2 spots).
This doesn't mean Hunter has to be closing at this speed right now. Also, the race yesterday was about 20 seconds faster, which is not insignificant.
Still, a 59 is far, far away from what will be required to make the olympic team, let alone be competitive on the world stage. Especially when others were closing faster - he had competition.
I wish Hunter the best. But his closing speed must improve for him to be competitive next year.
It’s early December, ... Drew is fine with where he needs to be in the middle of a Fvkced-up year. I’d be over the top excited if he ran 13:02 with a massive kick; but then wouldn’t we all understand that he needs that type of performance in the summer of 2021... It’s called timing.

So you pick one workout out of context during his pre-season training, which really wasn't that bad and most likely just a tuneup workout, and think that is evidence that his training sucks?
The reality is, he's coming off an injury and building towards the Oly trials. Teare and Grijalva are most likely overtraining for December because they're young and are chomping at the bit to run fast. I'm not a Hunter fanboy whatsoever but it seems like he's doing the right thing by not overdoing it in December.
It wasn't a tune-up workout. They all said in the video it was meant to be a hard workout. Check your facts you moron.
His injury was 1.5 years ago. Does a stress fracture have a 3 year recovery?
The reality is he was going for the Olympic standard and HE FAILED. If they weren't really trying hard, they are dumb because he now has to chase the standard in the spring.
Everyone knows he actually was peaking for this race. Since he got embarrassed, he will try to downplay how hard he was training for it. But if you look at his training it's extremely similar to what he did when he was peaking in 2019.
bro that’s different from a tactical race man

Men peak at age 23 statistically (at least with regards to avg. PR age of top 50 men in 5k history).
Not relevant to American athletes for a couple reasons.
- it would surprise me if there were any men in the top 50 who were born in America
- given limited aerobic development, American athletes generally wouldn't peak over 5000m until 25-30
That could be the future of US distance running right there. That's talent.
Woody is faster than Bob "MF " Kennedy, I'll be a broke duc og?
I had predicted 13:10-13:20 for Hunter, Teare and Grijalva. all of them. Why wasn’t Hocker in the sub-13:15 race after taking Teare to the wire in a time trial? This was reminiscent of the PayJo meet a few years ago when Jenkins, Estrada, and a few other young guns broke 13:20. It’s a similar progression, as well.
13:17 closing in 57 is promising for a young man who is promised a spot on his country’s national team, if a standard is made. It seems that he may be in the position to make a 5k final, if they progression continues. Go Luis!
Put them in that same position in May, and arrange for them all to hit 12:10 at the bell.
Cooper Tears will run with the field at the LA Olympics
The problem with the Tinman group is that he's likely got only one guy that has better or comparable leg speed than him in Guzman (is he even in the States?) So with Pat Joseph leaving the team there's really no one that can push him at the faster end of the spectrum. On the other side the guys that are specializing in the more strength based events have far lower potential and thus likely can't push him too much either since they're essentially doing a lot of the same training as Hunter most of the year.
Contrast that with a group like Kipchoge's where he's got guys that are flat out better than he is at certain types of workouts such as Augustine yet he has the advantage in the longer strength workouts. Everyone benefits this way. Obviously you can run fast running solo many have done that. And by the way no Rupp was not the best guy at NOP, that's a false statement for most of his career. It is much better to have a group of similarly talented individuals than to train alone.

Any predictions for Luis and Drew for 5K? I'll go with 13:15 and 13:17 respectively.
-Off by a second for both. I need to up my game.

Very good chance Grijalva will be competing in the Olympics. Not many people from Guatemala running 13:16. Was that a NR?
Yes it was, not only a NR but also a Central America record.
It wouldn't matter if Drew had better training partners at Tinman because the training SUCKS. He needs a better coach. Tinman is a high school gym teacher.

If I were a pro runner I would block letsrun from my computer. This thread would be mental cancer for someone like Hunter to read right now. Probably for Grijalva too.
Good advice. Add coaches to that statement, too. Like Tinman. On LetsRun, for all we know, there is only a small handful of negative nellies out there, and an overwhelming number of Hunter & Tinman supporters, but on this message board all it takes is one bad word by one anonymous poster to hurt someone's reputation and/or to mess with a runner's head (at any level or age) or coach's head.
Admittedly, some comments are legitimate, but also many are by people who just don't know the big picture or think their way is the only way. (Two respected MDs can have radically different, but c*ocksure, diagnoses and treatment plans for a sick patient.) Yeah, Drew didn't make the Olympic standard, and he was outkicked again, but it's DECEMBER. He also ran a PR, which followed a bad injury, as a young buck. Every race is a signpost which offers lessons that can be taken to heart so that the next effort is even better. This will apply to Drew and Tinman.
The fact that two collegiate guys beat Drew proves that Grijalva and Teare are incredibly talented, too. Have these two shot their wads too early in one race months before the Trials and then maybe the Olympics? If you believe some on LetsRun, they're toast. If you believe others, they're brilliant and will only get better. And we don't know lots of the story and never will.
Will he have to make a decision to run for usa or Guatemala? I remember seeing him race in HS in Sacramento at big meet, very shy and nice kid. We talked to him in the parking lot after for a few minutes.
Stop it. 23 years old isn’t a young buck in distance running. Especially one that skipped the collegiate system to go pro at 19 years old.

Exactly. Cheptegei broke the 5k world record at 23.
He should be doing much better. I think 80% of the blame is on tinman, and 20% on Drew.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
