Well yeah, if you want to focus on distance, then by all means, put all your eggs in one basket. Just don’t expect to be competitive in Indoor or Outdoor.

Not dirty or unethical. The rules have just changed since his time. Sorry you did not know this. Probably not old enough...
Oh, and the SJSU job might as well pay 3k when adjusted for cost of living.
Way to dodge the question on SJSU. So if you are asking if I will continue a similar situation as I do with my HS team for 20 times the money then the answer is yes. So stop comparing them.
Much simpler way to solve it. Take 30% of track scholarships and make them xc scholarships instead.
3.75 for men. 5.5 for women... are now XC scholarships. If you are on a xc scholarship you can run track but only in events 800 and longer. If you are on a track scholarship you can't run XC.
If this were done it would force all schools to pay attention to both sports... track and XC. No overweighting one way or the other.
So simple that it will never ever happen.
I haven't read his book, but he won his first track & field titles with jumpers and sprinters getting big points in addition to solid distance runners. Jumper sprinter, Mike Conley, was on the first championship team and Arkansas continued have great jumpers for numerous years. They didn't win all those titles with just distance, not even close.
He said “build through XC and distances” not “build only with xc and distances.” Mike Conley was the man and then some, but everyone knows the distance and middle distance runners were the backbone of the Razorbacks with horizontal jumpers being next. Short sprints didn’t really become great until Wallace Spearmon Jr and Tyson Gay were around.
Sorry, I think you guys misread the title of this thread. This one is for jobs.

Oh, do tell. I ran for him for 5 years, then was a volunteer coach for him for 3 more years. Please enlighten us on these now "illegal" according to NCAA rules, tactics and strategies.
So is Michigan going to hold off on a throws hire till next year?

READ THE BOOK! and get your facts straight.

I think they might be trying to state that the ideas about "permissible benefits" have constricted over the last 40 years or so. Again, as they state "not dirty or unethical"
I'm not very familiar with D1 rules, but I rules in other divisions have tightened over things that I suppose could be considered "team building".
That said, I think this argument is pretty weak. I think McDonnell would have been just fine under the modern rules.

Hmmm...?
I'll give you a chance to elaborate and clarify before I call you an IDIOT.

Squash what? Did I post anything false or inaccurate? Did I mention anything about recent results? Is John McDonnell still coaching?
Maybe you should do some research before opening your big mouth. Yeah, the basics of successful distance running have changed so much in 30-40 years. Better yet, while you do your research reach out to Mike Smith, Mark Wetmore, and Ed Eyestone and ask them about JM. I think these coaches have been somewhat successful in the 21st century...JACKA**!

Stay in your lane Winny. This stuff is over your head. Learn and know your history.
And yes, I know this is a job thread and will no longer post or comment otherwise.
There are very, very few schools who are fully-funded and place all their scholarships in to distance. The bigger difference is “fake aid” for weak academics, need, etc. it is as naive and ignorant as saying the Ivies don’t have athletic scholarships.
In fact, I don’t think one school is fully-funded and puts all scholarships in to xc.
