Time to shift to 2021... May it be better than 2020! Lol
2021 College Track & Field Open Coaching Positions Discussion
Report Thread

Anyone have a list of official positions, future (likely) positions to be on the lookout for?
-
Any update on Xavier? Are they nearing a decision?
Any update on Colgate Sprints and Hurdles posted awhile back?
Any update on St. Francis Jumps?
And who will replace Lisa as the assistant if she gets the head?
Trying to get the 2021 convo going. -
Someone brought up UConn on the other thread, will they replace Moose Akanno who left for Penn?
Northeastern looks to have lost a coach since last year, could be another potential opening but not sure event group -
Anybody have info about a potential opening at Louisiana Lafayette?

From what I can tell on social looks like Batey is back in Arkansas as a PE teacher but obviously no posting from ULL yet. -
My understanding is that ULL has a person in line but is in hiring freeze.
-
What will the Big10 look like two years from now? 6 of 13 head positions will definitely turn over as they are either already open or have coaches at retirement age or older!
Michigan State - open
Nebraska - ancient
Indiana - ancient
Ohio State - old enough
Wisconsin - old enough
Michigan - old enough
Who replaces these fossils? -
Not you, you’ll never reach their stature.
-
Dude get off LetsRun w/ your BS. I’m sure if any athletic director saw what you post on LetsRun im sure they would not be happy

I can't see Mick retiring anytime soon.
I'm not totally sure how old he is but I don't think that he's up there yet.
He's still super involved in recruiting and his teams are doing great.
When I talked to him this summer while I was looking at schools he seemed pretty certain that he was gonna be at the school at least for the next couple of years but that was also probably partially a recruiting pitch. -
Did San Jose State hire a xc/distance coach yet?

Yes, they currently have a distance coach. -

Yes, they currently have a distance coach.
To clarify: No. They lost their full time head cross country coach and had their volunteer assistant take up the slack. Athletes are transferring and little to no distance recruiting. They do not seem to care about their program holistically and certainly do not care about their distance side of things. What would it take to get a good distance coach to leave a program during a pandemic? I think you have your answer. -
Not officially open as of yet however based on circumstances there will very likely be a head XC coach and assistant XC coach opening at University of Arizona for the 2021 XC season. Head Track coach is somewhat likely to be open as well. XC team is operating entirely on interim coaches, with a 78 year old head coach.
Existing coach James Li abruptly “retired” and assistant coach Hannah Peterson also separated from the program, it is likely both were forced out due to multiple scandals and claims of negligence, abuse, etc. and generally just overall team culture mismanagement. There is another thread detailing those allegations. Fred Harvey (head Track coach) was heavily involved in the allegations but has not left the program as of yet. His departure is entirely speculative at this point but would not be surprising, put it in the “likely” category.
Positions were quickly filled with interim coaches, head XC coach was assigned to Dave Murray (who very successfully coached AZ many decades ago) while Bernard Lagat and Doug Keen signed on as assistant coaches. All 3 are listed as interim and were brought in very hastily after Li & Peterson’s departures. Murray is 78 so it would be surprising if he stays as head coach. Remains to be seen what the other 2 will do. Keen has had good success as a HS coach near Tucson for a while and could take the head XC coach job should Murray not stay, however Keen is a professor at the school so he may only be filling in temporarily. Lagat has no coaching experience but is retired from track competition, unsure if he is going to continue on the road racing scene.
Keep your eyes peeled for all of these positions to be open at the conclusion of the 2021 outdoor track season prior to XC season starting up. -

I know the guy who took over. He was not a volunteer assistant. -

Not on athletic page, wasn't full time, guessing still not full time. Didn't officially open it up. Might be a nice guy and good coach who is helping, but I wouldn't say anyone "took over". Someone likely already at SJSU stepped in to help out perhaps (like a volunteer). Do you have a name or details? Currently, it does not look like anyone "took over", rather someone helping out, volunteer, part time, or something similar. Maybe he does a good job and they make it official in the Spring or next Fall. I have already heard of a couple kids who left the program and described the situation as a current part time or volunteer sending some training remotely as the "fix" to the situation at hand. All the best to your buddy, though. -
