It will be on the American university track

So she's going for the Women's only track 10 mile American record? Is that even a thing?
Are you planning to attend? Flotrack is streaming it so why are you so upset?

The article talks about her having to cover the costs of closing roads. Thought this was a road event and a road record.
Seriously? A ten mile track record?

To the contrary, it IS her fault. She alone is responsible for the shape she's in. She could be doing 30 miles a week at a 9 minute pace. She has that option. Know what else she could do? Not run a step at all during the pandemic. This is a feasible choice taken by more than 99% of all people.

Another point. I don't disagree much. I think these contrived solo time trials are kind of cool in a way. I mean, you still have to run that far that fast. But I agree with many of you in that it is dissimilar to doing it in a race. I've known blowhards in various sports that brag about what they did out in practice but when the main event came around, where were they? Kids who have never finished a 10km blabbing about how fast they're sure they could do one, well, do one. Let's see the results. If you split the last 10k of your long run every week in a time that would win your local Turkey Trot, well.... go win the Turkey Trot.
OK here's the point I was hoping someone could help make. Remember during the summer when BTC was doing this kind of thing on tracks? I remember a thread where some were calling BS on their American Record claims. Most posters said was real and legit and should count. It was pointed out, however, that it must be a race open to someone other than you and your pacers. When the Fan Club said there was no rule to that effect, someone said, 'Oh yeah?' And straight up posted the rule. Right out of the USATF rule book. Printed it word-for-word.
Do any of you remember that thread or how to find it? Somebody post the rule again. This 10 miler might count. There's a drug testing question of some sort, right? But most of these exhibitions don't count according to USATF. Did BTC pay several grand for immediate post-race testing? I don't remember their story claiming as much.
But another objection, if USATF wishes to raise the issue - and it would be shockingly hypocritical of then not to; after all, it's their rule - is the lack of other entrants being allowed to race. So, this particular one could count since a few other racers from different clubs and sponsors might be there, but no one was in Rupp's attempt at the AR from outside of NOP.
And the recent so-called American Junior Record in the marathon certainly had no other school or club invited, welcome, or involved. Don't get me wrong. I am completely in favor of teenage marathoning and did it myself. I believe the opposite of most of you in that school-affiliated running is a waste of time and raced roads myself starting at 14. So I am in disagreement with most of you in this sense: it was very cool that she did it, and I wholeheartedly endorse such activity. It did, however, violate the rule in question - the one from the USATF book posted in that other thread. The one about other schools or clubs being invited.
We'll see which 'records' USATF allows.

Yeah this feels weird to be doing on the track when the previous records have been broken on the roads. The article on Letsrun also talked about all the prep work they had to do for this, and if they are actually doing it on the track then they are really overstating the amount of work that should be required. I'm sure it's some but come on, just get a timing system and some other participants and run it whenever you want.
Also DC is one of the easiest places to hold a road 10 mile race without shutting down a lot of streets - just run it around Hains Point. Loops are around 3.1 miles, it is totally flat, and there are basically no cars. As an added bonus they could use around 4 miles of the actual Cherry Blossom course since CB goes around there too. Even if they didn't get it officially closed off to cars they could just show up one day, run 3 loops of Hains Point, and easily run the tangents without needing to navigate cars or other runners.
The rule is ambiguous. It just says it has to be open to someone not in your program, but it doesn't say that person has to run. So for example, if you invite Jordan Hasay to run it too (and no one else), does that count, even though you know she'll say no? The rules imply yes, so all you have to do is write to someone who is still an active, elite runner who you know will turn the invitation down and you've satisfied the rules.
I believe you can apply for an exception to the rule before the event. Bowerman likely did so and USATF likely granted the exception, considering the circumstances.
You can’t do loops at Hains Point. NPS no longer allows races to go on Buckeye Drive. You have to go back and forth.
I was there at the track. The race went well! I didn’t catch exact splits but she was flying. Good job by her!
Yeah but for a 4 person race you could just run around it anyways and not close it off. Obviously different case than your marathon with many more people.

They won't give you a permit to run without closed roads, and even with just a handful of people, it's illegal to race without a permit. Not a big deal if you're just getting a few friends together for a time trial, but if you want an AR, you probably don't want to be breaking the law.
