The lockdowns aren't hurting businesses. The virus is hurting businesses. Even if everything were allowed to open, very few people want to go out and risk their lives for mozzarella sticks or whatever the f-ck, because the virus still exists and is a real risk to them or vulnerable people they care about. Business will not return to normal until the virus is under control no matter what rules (or no rules) are in place.
The solution is to close nonessential businesses, mandate masks, restrict gatherings, etc. AND financially support businesses who are struggling because of COVID. Rent relief/eviction moratorium/wage support/anything else we need.
Then when the vaccines are out, reopen. Businesses won't be successful until then anyways, so let's protect people's health and support small businesses for the next 3-6 months until that happens.
Speak for yourself. I'm not worried about getting COVID, and I dont interact with vulnerable people. I live alone and don't have friends like a good letsrun troll. Yes, businesses will suffer due to fewer customers during this time. But fewer customers is better than none at all.
Also, by allowing young healthy people to be exposed to the virus (at least young healthy people who do NOT cohabitate with elderly or infirm folks) we will reach herd immunity faster. And herd immunity (by exposure to virus or vaccination) is the only way out of this.
I love this fantasy that the federal government can just subsidize pay everyone's rent, pay everyone's wages, and prop up small businesses for 2 year while we're waiting for a vaccine. Who exactly is going to pay for that?
