I know how Let'sRunners hate injustices against the sport of athletics and its athletes. I have a local story, that is getting good localized coverage, but needs more than that. So, I call on Let'sRunners to make it known that this two-lane track plan is an outrage.
Context: Oldest high school north of San Francisco and west of Winnipeg, Victoria High School, originally built in 1867, the latest building was erected in 1914. It is the only high school in the capital city proper of Victoria, BC. The city (council and mayor) secretly worked with the presiding school district to reduce the plans to the track and rugby pitch that was originally built in 1949 as a memorial for those who fought in WW2.
It is currently a 400-yard cinder track with an unkempt natural grass pitch and a small amount of seating.
The renovation was to take place in conjunction with the seismic upgrade to the main building, which will cost $70-million.
Fearing that not enough funds were available, the city quietly leased off school property to a developer for a socialized housing project. The problem here is there is an easement from the proposed development site to the track of 8m, encroaching into the track space:
1. The changes were not publicly disclosed/consulted, even though donors et al were promised an eight-lane rubber track, turf pitch, lights, and better seating, which would also serve the community.
2. Their secret plan reduces the track to a useless two lanes with small court beach volleyball.
Rugby is a tradition in the city and is competed at the provincial level. Beach volleyball is not an official school sport. Makes no sense at all.
The Friends of Vic High (FOVH) are asking for a public inquiry into the issue.
