That's more than $400 per student at Utah but it sounds justified as the slain athlete and her mom called the police more than 12 times and they didn't realize he was a paroled sex offender.

The re-telling of the story drives me nuts.
RIP Lauren
Utah got off lightly. It's too bad it never went to trial. I imagine punitive damages would have been a lot higher than $13.5M.
That is really sad :(
nothing could have prevented Lauren's death?
What a stupid thing to say.
I wish the campus police had called the actual police if it was beyond their abilities.
It sounds like the money will be going to good use hopefully.
I've just realised the campus police might mean a different thing to what I thought. They are the actual police? If so, sorry.
So if the police won’t take care of a danger to you or your family, maybe the average citizen should be able to???
This is the most important part of the story:
"They have said all money from the settlement will go to the Lauren McCluskey Foundation, which contributes to causes associated with "campus safety, amateur athletics and animal welfare."
I know the McCluskeys, and hope this thread is moderating to reflect the positive outcome of the case only.
from:
"The end result of the settlement is support for causes that were important to Lauren McCluskey when she was alive and resources that could have prevented her death. The university will donate $3 million to the Lauren McCluskey Foundation, which Jill and Matthew McCluskey started after their daughter’s death to focus on campus safety, as well as financial support for track and field athletes and animal welfare. The university also agreed to pay the McCluskeys $10.5 million; at the press conference, the McCluskeys said that money also will go to the Lauren McCluskey Foundation."
So the thread headline is literally wrong; the school paid the family $10.5mn, not $13.5mn. And it is... conceptually misleading, if not wrong, since all the money is going to the foundation. That's the difference between "individual family gets rich off of horrible tragedy" and "individual family uses proceeds from horrible tragedy to seed foundation that will help others." Which is, imho, a pretty damn big difference.

Agreed, as a student at a huge university in the past. Campus issues related to females and stocking need to ALWAYS be taken seriously.
As a University of Utah alum, I'm still ashamed that it took this long for the U to own up to its failings. This is such a sad story. One of the campus police officers involved is known to have shared the explicit photos that the perpetrator was using to blackmail McCluskey with other officers in a non-work context and got off without punishment. The U police department, which is an actual department and not just campus security, needs to be disbanded.
