Sweden with over 900 cases on Oct 13 (Sweden back fills test results so that number could go higher) for the highest one day total since the summer. News reports from today have over 1,000 cases reported today, but those results probably include previous positives that are backfilled on the daily tracking. Still, the clear trend is upward. Swedish officials are in denial that the current outbreak is significant. They have a few weeks to do something before it is too late.
A "light touch" strategy is only as good as the ability to test, trace and isolate cases. Sweden does have an excellent public health infrastructure, but the volume of positive cases is getting into a territory that will make containment difficult without further restrictions. Herd immunity is proving to be non-existent in Sweden.
Norway and Finland are holding their ground against the fall wave. Both countries have kept new cases within about 200 a day. Denmark is struggling with cases around 500 a day, but they share a border with Germany, making it more difficult to isolate from the rest of Europe.
