Anyone with experience know? If you just wanted shoes and apparel from adidas, nike, etc., what would you need to run? Sub 30 for 10k? Sub 2:25 for the marathon?

You dont need to be fast at all.
In fact, all you need is about US$60. You just go to the shoe store and say "I'll make you a deal on those Nikes!"
GOTCHA!!! Jason
I don't know how to get a sponsorship from a major shoe company, but there are other opportunities.
I was able to get swim gear, bike stuff, and a few misc tri things from a bike shop/tri shop for a few years when I was at the peak of my triathlon career. I also got entry fees paid to 4-6 local races per year. All I really had to do was race in the clothes they gave me, and sing the praises of the clothes, etc, to other triathletes and suggest they spend their money at this certain shop.
Not a bad deal, really, and worth about $500-$750/year, not a huge chunk of change but nice.
If you can't attract attention from a major shoe company, you might try a local sporting goods store, shoe store, health club, etc. One fast friend got a free gym membership simply by wearing a t-shirt advertising the gym at all his races. He would also give an occasional talk at the gym. He wasn't out much time and it saved him close to $500/year.
Write down some reasons why you deserve sponsorship, fire off some letters, or go ask the management. You'd be surprised what you might get.

I know 18min 5k guys who have been sponsored runners. It depends on the answers to a number of questions, such as: Are you fast? Are you the fastest (or close to it) in your area? Are you a nice person? Are you visible?
One of the slower runners I know got sponsored through a local shop that held group runs he helped coach. One of the faster guys I know got dropped from several companies because he was horribly inconsistent and would show up wearing gear from other companies.
Form a club and then approach commpanies for sponsorship. My club is sponsored by New Balance. We get free tank tops. Better than nothing. When my daughter was running, she trained with a group of women who dominated the road races in a major city. They received Nike equipment for half of the wholesale price. But Nike didn't go to them; they contacted Nike and a few other companies and went with the best deal. The major companies like to see even local runners winning races while wearing their equipment
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
