This is one of the reasons why I want to see 5000m & 10000m go away. It would be so exciting watching Joshua C. race Jakob I. in 3000m after men would have to go through two rounds of heats. Joshua C. would prevail in a TT on a cool Europeans summer night. After a couple of rounds of heats Joshua C. would have a tougher time versus sub-3:30 1500m men in 3000m final. Three-thousand metres should be the longest track event.
That's just the thing. A cool European night is exactly where Josh C would be at a disadvantage. His tiny, frail 110 pound body works well for hot weather but he has no insulation for running in 45 degree weather.
Your post is why I want 3000m to be the longest track event. Up to 3000m, we could have great debates before a 3000m final. We could debate how much the two rounds of heats took the life out of legs of sub-3:30 1500m guys versus the 3:35 plus 1500m guys. Would the 3:35 plus 1500m guys need to go all out wire to wire in heats? It would be exciting! It would be 7 1/2 minutes of no commercial breaks. No long cut aways to field events. No long cut aways for commentators to discuss other issues.
