The olympic marathon is nothing. It doesn't mean a damn thing. The winner is not the best marathoner unless the best marathoner happens to show up and run seriously, which isn't often anymore. Rupp goes and shows his bronze medal to anyone who knows about marathoning, will they think he's the world's 3rd best marathoner? Nope.
But that's just it - in a tactical, NON-PACED race like the Olympics - there are not three guys in the world that can beat him. It's kind of obvious when you watch him drop supposed "2:03 and 2:04" guys all the time.
And please fill us in - in which Olympics did the best marathoner not show up and run seriously? We're waiting........
