Yes, I would supplement with iron immediately. In college, I was a ferritin of 12 and struggled on runs/workouts. Once I knew it was low, I started taking liquid iron. It took a couple of months to start feeling better. I stopped doing hard workouts and just did easy runs until I started feeling better. Pr’ed in the 1500m by 8 secs that year.

12 is really low man. I was at 12 in college & would always see a deterioration in performance/tight-tired legs once I began a season. Once I got on liquid iron, I set many PRs within a few months. Some doctors say 30 is ok, but you really want to see it at 50 or above for a distance runner. I would suggest consulting a hematologist or sports med doc and see if you can get some iron infusions in the beginning.
