The team concept in cross country is contrived.
Your performance is in no way affected by any of your teammates. It's why we give both individual AND team awards at the end of the race.
Personally, I liked having a good team, it was a great bonus, but I LOVED the fact that if my team was bad, either due to lazy disinterested teammates or just plain ol lack of talent, I could still run well and hope to win or finish as high as I could.
I will say that the "Team" is more of a training group and having a good one vs a bad one is certainly better, but not essential like true team sports like any of the ball sports.
I gotta say I think dude's post is right on. Now, I'm coming from a distinct lack of team membership in my running life, in contrast with the OP, so maybe I don't realize how or how much it comes into play. But still, like the very accurate #4 and #8 point out, it is very much an individual sport. No one else affects you short of pushing you over or tripping you or something like that. In fact, whether I was 15 or 51, I never needed a team around me to perform. I didn't see what it would have provided.
