Isn’t it possible the seeds were sown when we did draconian lockdowns to begin with, denying people exercise and natural vitamin D via sunlight and oppressing them in poorly ventilated and stagnant indoor spaces? We could’ve spent Apr-Aug protecting our elderly and the morbidly obese while letting everyone else get exposed with minor masking and distancing requirements. If there is a fall reemergence, it’s because we are stupid. So far, it does not look like elementary to college age cases are resulting in hospitalizations.
We never went through a real lockdown. We should have. It should have been 2 - 3 weeks where all of us were forced to stay inside (with those essential working), but we had this half-a** attempt at a lockdown. Since we didn't take it seriously enough early, we are dealing with the lingering consequences now.
I don’t disagree that we should’ve “locked down” earlier for an assessment period, & our Federal government was late on this, but I’m not sure what you are smoking. Where I live, we quarantined for five weeks, could only go out for essentials like Costco. Nevermind all of the indoor gyms, restaurants, libraries, pools, etc that were shut down, but tennis courts, basketball courts, golf courses, etc were all shut down, including at public school facilities. Nobody could do anything except potentially drive to a trail, but all of the trails were packed, so the distancing went out the window. It was essentially five weeks of isolation.
The “science” says we now know who is most vulnerable, and we are much better treating it than we were in March/April. So, we missed a colossal opportunity to let society congregate during the summer months, while STILL quarantining the elderly and at risk, to let this thing burn through the young and healthy, even though it already has to a large degree. One of my kids was forced into a two week quarantine because of a “potential” exposure at school, while her sibling was not. Wow, that’s really scientific right there.
Meanwhile, we have a convention center & other facilities w excess ICU capacity that was never used. We had five golden months here to get maximum exposure. Of those I know who acquired this, most were asymptomatic or had mild colds. I knew one obese gal who is a nurse. They were debating admitting her to a hospital, but, thank God they just sent her home with oxygen instead, and it was the right call. Otherwise, they may have ventilated her and killed her. Dexamethasone works really well to prevent the dreaded cytokine storm in the small minority who get it.
Our properties are seeing more delinquencies and non-payments of rent. We’ve held on as long as possible, but we will have to start laying off soon, right before the holidays. How many people have to lose livelihoods? How many more deaths related to mental health issues and domestic disputes are we going to tolerate? How many deaths from people putting off procedures are we going to tolerate? How much crappier are we going to allow our public education to be, because, having experienced both private & public sector with my kids, it was already terrible before we went remote?
We’ve had five months to let this thing do a slow burn through the population, so, if there’s a big second wave in the fall, we only have ourselves to blame (well, and our governors). What’s worse - people who would’ve otherwise survived the flu will die. Because we are a culture of fear that preys on the masses.
We should’ve taken the Swedish approach...
