I’ve been offered a walk on spot at two D1 programs. I’m a big fan of both academically and I have pretty solid scholarship money just from getting a good act score and decent grades.
School A is not the best program as far as D1 goes. Their fastest 800m guy runs 1:54 and their slowest runs 2:01. Their fastest miler runs 4:18 and their slowest runs 4:36. Top 5 5kers run 14:38-16:02. School A coach however seems a lot more interested in developing me as an athlete and wants to develop me specifically for 400-1000 as a true mid distance guy.
School B is a bit better of a program. Their fastest 800m guy runs 1:49, with their slowest running 1:57.5, their fastest miler runs 4:02 with their slowest running 4:21. Their Top 5 5kers run 13:52-15:36. Coach B doesn’t seem super interested, offering me a walk in spot but telling me I need to be sub 1:57, 4:25 and sub 16:00 before I can race.
I’ve ran 51.5 for the 400m, 1:58.1 for the 800m and 4:31 for the 1600m. 5k is 16:27 XC.
School A seems a lot more invested in me and want to develop me in the events that I’m best at, but they aren’t as fast.
School B doesn’t seem all that invested, want me to fit the classic distance mold, but I’m also very lucky to get an offer as they typically only take in walkons and recruits that are a few seconds faster than me.
I know I have potential to get a lot faster and will be a good fit speed wise to both programs within a year.
I’m thinking school A, but I’d like some second opinions!
