From what I'd heard earlier this year, the World Half will be replaced by a World Road Championship - the distance may vary each year depending on which races bids for it (could be 10 mile, 8k, 15k, etc). So this will make the selection race different each year as well, I'd imagine.
Now, as to what happened to Abdi on the course. I was on the lead truck, just past the 10K mark the course takes a quick right under I-95 then left along Long Wharf, which is the windiest part of the course. As we're approaching the first turn I was looking at some flags to see how strong and which direction the wind was blowing, and the trcuk kept going straight. Abdi followed about 10-15 meters past the turn, others in the truck and a guy on a bike yelled at him to turn to he went back and onto the right course. His split for that mile was 5:07; the one just before was 4:43. So there's something like 20 seconds, although the wind might account for some of it (his next mile, into the wind, was 4:49).
Then just past 9 miles the truck almost missed another turn, but Abdi was watching the signs and didn't go off course; at worst he took the turn a bit wide. That mile was 4:48.
Finally, in East Rock Park, there was indeed a garbage truck, but it was pulled off to the side and not on the running course, although it did come back down the course a bit later. The vehicular obstruction here was as the lead truck came down a hil before 10 miles there were 2 or 3 cars coming from the opposite direction. The first one was in the process of making a 3 point turn and was 90 degrees across the road, with about 3 feet between the front bumper and the curb. We yelled at the driver not to move, and Abdi was able to slip through the space. His split for that mile was 5:58 (this mile has the one significant climb on the last half of the course). His 11th mile was 4:45, 12th was 4:40.
Draw your own conclusions, but I doubt he would have gotten Khalid's CR even w/ a perfect run, although he would have come a lot closer.
