I'll start off by saying I'm all for their success. It might seem ironic once you've read the rest of this post. However, please realise that I'm not drawing any conclusions. The post is just for the sake of bouncing some logical thoughts and ideas between everyone. It's human nature to question matters that bring wonder or rarity. Please keep posts in a logical context.
As of recently Jakob Ingebrigtsen has become the 8th fastest 1500m runner in history, running an incredible mark of 3:28.68 over 3 3/4 laps at Stade Louis, Monaco; behind the seventh fastest of all time Timothy Cheriuiyot.
The performance correlates to an IAAF performance score of 1264 for the 19 year old. Rewarding the teenager with the 2nd highest performance from an athlete without close African heritage, from 800m to the Marathon (the other being Seb Coe's 800m PR of 1:41.73 in 1981 with a score of 1275). Jakob's brothers are also would class they've run incredible times and performances that I'm sure everyone is familiar with without elaboration. I guess the question is: "What is it that makes Team Ingebrigtsen so unique/special to deliver performances that greatly outclass almost all of the other non-african distance runners historical feats?" Would love to get some feedback, here are a couple of possibilities.
-Approach to training: Their father has discovered a new and revolutionary training philosophy that hasn't been taken advantage of effectively by other athletes. Are the brothers the first to utilise these new methods and reach new heights?
-Talent probability: Norway may have a small population and not particularly seek out track talent compared to the rest of the world. On the contrary, it's not impossible, just unlikely that the genetics of the family are vastly superior to the other athletes whom they proceed. The Ing's are once in multi-generational talents and despite there being little previous history of athletics/track coaching understanding within the family it was clear that the boys had great talent for the sport. Correspondingly, they saw fit to start a tv series to showcase the superb ability and had faith and no shadow of a doubt that they'd become the best ever. They knew they had something truly special?
-Technological: Does present tech explain their phenomena? Perhaps they are great athletes but not as great as perceived? Improved tracks and shoes may be able to explain their performances. Other great athletes such as Mottram have also been able to run great times in an era without better tech. (think Bekele's old 5km WR vs the latest WR)
-Typical build for running: ( in the genes section) The Ingebrigtsen's bring an uncharacteristic build to the sport. Do bigger stronger legs help? Long muscular torsos compared to previous stereotype of lanky and very slim (no examples needed). This provides them with more power to keep pace?
-A mix of the above?
Jakob may be 19 and already faster then all non-african runners before him breaking the trends of continuity with every stride, does it hold truth to the notion 'too good to be true?' Could there be a cover up by IAAF to bring western hope back to distance running? We'll never really know, we can only hope that the team are clean and if they are then they truly deserve every credit coming their way, because boyyyy are they extraordinary!
Performances from westerners to measure Jakobs 1264 (the africans are too incredible).......
5000m Craig Mottram 1225 (12:55.76)
3000m Isaac Carlos 1243 (7:29.34)
10 000m Galen Rupp 1251 (26:44.36)
Half Mara Julien Wanders 1226 (59:13)
Full Mara Sugar Osako 1244 (2:05:29)
P.s took me 20min to write this post, or did it? You'll have to take my word for it.
