I don't think the first point is true. The middle distances used to be and still are more popular (for spectators) than long distances. viz. DL scratching 10k and 5k. The rest are good points although the last point is a paradox because at the professional level the 800m has become the most specialized middle/long race with the best athletes mostly focussing only on this event, not 400/800 or 800/1500 as in former times.
