Pretty impressive how smooth she is in the water

chocolate milk though. if i go to a public pool and there's a localised patch of brown cloudy water i'm not getting in.
she didn't spill
That is pretty cool.
Is that the typical technique to let your forward arm remain in the water a moment after it enters the water before pulling it back to reduce turbulence? Her stroke is incredibly efficient. I use about five times the effort to get through a length, I would guess.
Seems so in this video. He holds his arm straight ahead after entering the water until the other arm is starting to enter the water. And twisting the body seems to be key as well.
The exaggerated version of that is called the “catch-up drill.”
Generally speaking it's call Front Quadrant Swimming and has been all the range since the early 90's(?). It's the process of reducing drag by increasing length. More closely resembles the modified catchup drill rather than full catchup. Every swimmer needs to master the modified catchup drill before they can entertain the notion of becoming proficient.
Hard to race FQS over short distances as your focus should be on more constant pressure to achieve maximum propulsion. FQS is great for longer pool swims and open water though.
The faster you can swim slow the faster you can swim fast and FQS will allow that to happen.

I wondered that too. Is that how you are supposed to swim or did she exaggerate holding her arm forward just because she had a glass of milk on her head?
Not that I'm by any means a proficient swimmer but I've always been lead to believe that true FQS is most beneficial to pool swimming and smooth water. Once you get in open water with some chop it's much less about extension and much more about turnover which almost eliminates the ability to FQS.
I'm up all night to Ledecky
Lets get Shelby to run a lap with a glass of beer on her head.
She is an amazing distance swimmer. Her world records in the 400, 800, and 1500 mt. Freestyle events are faster than the Men's world records of the mid-70s!!
Special effects used for a chocolate milk commercial to be released in the future.
Do the flip without spilling, then I would be impressed.

How does it compare to either the ketchup or catsup drill?
A lot of triathlon centric coaches who have never been swim coaches push the higher tempo more thrashy open water freestyle. It helps a bit in the tight pack and turns but once you settle in there isn't as much difference between pool and open water. A good swimmer can swim with different technique depending on the demands of the event.
That's a pretty cool thing to do (although I agree that using *chocolate* milk was a bit ill-considered), but is it anything more than a neat trick? Is there some benefit to holding your head steady and level while swimming? I suspect there is, but I don't know enough about the sport to know.
The cup drill has traditionally been more of a backstroke thing but the snorkel opens up the possibilities in freestyle.
The kids in the video seem to manage kicking out and mounting the cup on the go... so yeah if you use pool water a flip turn is possible.
Tough to compare swim times from nowadays to times from back then. There have been a lot of changes from start blocks, underwater technique, suits, even goggles. Everything is faster now.
