Whoa...I am a dead donkey if average more than 162 in the first 10 miles of a marathon. So many differences in HR based training.
My HRmax is around 195 for reference.
Coach - Is your HRMax around 205? Sorry if you mentioned it already.

I believe the highest reliable value I ever saw was 202 a couple of years ago, so, yeah in the low 200s. I don't do much VO2max training, so I'm not often up in the redlining area. But, yeah, you would think with that marathon average, it's gotta be in that range. Still, that's an average of 90% HRmax for a 3 hour race, so maybe I sell myself short on my ability to tolerate "discomfort."
HR is definitely a highly personal thing... if you're gonna make any sense of it, you really have to have a lot of data about yourself, ideally under a variety of conditions.
I ended up just doing the 4 mile LT run. I was still debating when warming up but decided given I am just getting back into things post injury it would be greedy to start trying to link up miles at 5k pace.
I’ll test out the wheels in a 5x1k workout in 10 days.
Hope everyone is closing out there week well!
Having my coffee and debating a run or a ride. Run may win out.. but rest of summer I think I am going to ride more for a variety of reasons. One being that it’s easier to hydrate and being mildy dehydrated all summer is a problem for me.
4LT in these conditions sound brutal. No hard running for this guy until fall
It’s actually pretty nice up in MA this morning. It was like 64/65 when I was out.
Go for the run.
Damn. You suck! So jealous. It’s 75+71 here
By contrast Thursday was the worst run of my life. Went to bed at 186 the night before. Came back from 7.5 miles @ 7:59 pace and stepped on the scale... 175.4.
Ouch.

MY HRmax is 188 or so (the highest reading I can recall seeing was 185, so add a few beats to that).
I race marathons in the high 160s/low 170s.
I think one of the variations between runners is simply how long we can sustain a certain percentage of HR. And while I know some will claim that capacity can be trained, I think to some extent it's also inherent to each runner.

If I had more reliable access to my bike I'd be right there with you. I had an unplanned day off from running yesterday and just hit the weights hard. Was going to run in the morning like always and we got a massive storm while I was putting on my shoes, then had a repeat of the same thing when I was going to go after work (and it was 100 degrees...). First day off running in 3.5 weeks.
Also, I know you're a minimal equipment guy like me for strength...give the COVID program (bottom of the page) from these guys a look. It's free. I'm doing it in the afternoons and doing my running in the morning. With no races on the horizon, I'm getting stronger and addressing some long-standing issues (lower back, shoulders, core).

My avg HR for my recent July HM (74F + 70) was 188 according to my Garmin watch, with miles 6 onward progressing from 191 to 199 and the last tenth at 201. Not sure if it's to be believed. Also says I hit 209 at one point at the end (again, not so sure).

Looking at the SFAS/PSYOP/CA route mostly. Supposed to deploy next year, and when I get back I'll be in the window to put in my packets for SOF. Ranger School doesn't quite draw my interest, at the end of the day it's a leadership school that is essentially the hunger games, and it doesn't produce any new skillset other than an intense ability to suffer (which does have value of course!). If I was given a slot, I'd go, but I'd be unlikely to beg for it..
I'm looking to the other options because they present the ability to move into a totally new direction job-wise, and the mission sets of each are really interesting to me and align well with my career goals. That's really the reason I've come to train so hard, despite being in a notoriously softer physical specialty - those selections are 100% no joke. And frankly, at times its an advantage to be in a physically less intense specialty, because I can pour more energy into my own training instead of BS Company/BN/BDE runs and rucks!
Very cool. Lots of options out there to explore. AIT is where i started really distancing running (before I quit at 22). My drill sergeant would let 3 of us be in “A+” running formation which meant we could go run as long and as hard as we wanted to on run days. No jogging in formation. Which got me into pretty good shape cause we basically would end up racing every time we ran. Anyways.
Hope the path you choose works in your favor And thanks for the link. Very helpful.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
