So what--they are all professionals at the prime of their running careers and eat, live and breathe running. They also have every coaching, equipment, and training advantage that 99.9% of the rest of us never had during our most competitive days.

Hopefully that is what OP meant when he posted this thread.
The best women, such as Ms. Holihan & Ms. Schweizer, among others, ARE truly outstanding.
Unfortunately, I saw this as borderline misogynistic when I first opened it, but I am hoping OP wanted to convey your point and not another, less becoming option.
There is no possible misogynistic interpretation of this post. He is basically pointing out that both are fast, hence the midpoint between the two is fast.

Over the weekend I started a thread on the post of the week for last week.
Pretty sure this is today's post of the day.
Very succinct and sweet.
Do you like this type of threads?
10.49 + 9.58 = 20.07 / 2 = 10.035.
If a male sprinter sprints 10.04, he is closer to Flo Jo's 100m WR than he is to Bolt's 100m WR.
A male sprinter who sprints 10.04 most likely will make it out of round 1 and may make semi-finals, Olympic &/or W.C. 100m.
Not necessarily in the complex plane.
If Mo ran 12.78 + 22i, and Shelby ran 14.38 + 30i, and I ran a 20 + 20i, then I'd be
sqrt( (20-12.78)^2 + (20-22)^2) = 7.49 minutes away from Mo, but
sqrt( (20-14.38)^2 + (20-30)^2) = 11.47 minutes away from Shelby.
Because the second component of a complex number is "imaginary," I can imagine whatever I want for it.
I would barely beat her in the 1500 and would lose badly in the 5k. Oh well she is the best american female runner in the 5k ever. (I doubt I did enough quality miles to run that fast in a 5k ever)
Go Devils !!!

Checkmate
"Shows up on the results page" and "finished closer to" are two entirely different things.
Checkmate Squared.
I feel like the point of this thread is that Houlihan and Schweizer are so ridiculously fast that they are basically running male times. Not long ago, it was a HUGE deal when an American female broke 15. Breaking 14:30 was considered unthinkable outside of Ethiopia and Kenya. We are now at a point where we have to take Houlihan seriously when she boldly proclaims that she plans to break 14 one day. The thread title really puts things in perspective. US distance running has come so far since the dark ages of the 90s.
So what? Neither of them will beat the africans.

Sure sure. If all of us had one of the best coaches in the world and access to the best facilities and training... any other qualifiers you’d like to add? The thread title is sexist.
13:35 is a very good time, so for Shelby to be close to someone running that type of time means she's incredibly fast. Really this post is complimenting both Mo and Shelby. Because both of them ran incredibly fast, the time in the middle of both of their performances is also very fast.

Did you watch the world championships last year? Pretty sure both of them beat some of the Africans, not many people beat them last year. They have made another jump up this year, I wouldn't be shocked if they won medals next summer, it will be very challenging, but I won't be shocked.
I interpreted this thread as meaning if your PR is slower than 13:35 and you are a man, you should feel deflated because your time is closer to a woman's. That could be more of a reflection of my own shameful thinking than the intended meaning.
So many insecure butthurt guys on this thread. "Well if I had the coaches and facilities... I'd be closer to Moh!"
Yeah right lmao. Just a cool stat regardless of where you yourself stand.

I didn't think about this thread that way. I thought it had two purposes:
1) To see what times people say their PR is to see what the range of times is present on the boards because OP is curious
2) To give context for just how bonkers Shelby's time is, since many American men will never come close to that time
I guess latent sexist ideas would color it, but I think it was more about highlighting (mostly) Shelby and (less so) Moh
I didn't have trouble interpreting what the OP meant, but just don't find it impressive. Sure, you would finish closer to Houlihan than Moh and I guess that means something (they're both fast??), but you would still be ~300 meters ahead of the fastest woman in American history. I would feel okay about that.
And it feels a bit random. I get that they're in the same training group, but our markers are the fastest Canadian man and the fastest American woman. If we used the WR holders instead, the midway points would be considerably faster.
