It is unfortunate but looking at the big picture it is better to skip a season or two of sports tan possibly getting more people sick. I don't think most student athletes are at risk but they very well could interact with others that are.
Lives > Sports
If this happened when I was in college, I'm certain that at least 3 of the guys on my D3 team would have committed suicide if an outdoor season and a cross country season were cancelled. Not me, my teammates.
This sport is the only thing that keeps many people sane. It's the one aspect of their life they have control over. Take that away, and it's BAD NEWS. Add to that the fact that if schools are going all online there's little access to counseling services through the school. The lack of social contacts will exacerbate the mental issues being dealt with.
I doubt there is a way to check the stats, but I bet more college students will die of suicide than of coronavirus in 2020.
