It’s a decent marathon predictor in my experience.
You work your way up to 10 800s with about the same times for recovery before a marathon. Your time in minutes and seconds should be close to your marathon time in hours and minutes. If you are serious about the marathon you might try the 5x18 instead.
From most of what I've read, it is more accurate to add around 10 minutes as a marathon predictor.

So if I run my 800’s in 2:40. My recovery should also be 2:40?

theoretically, yes.
Its a good marathon predictor if you are also doing all your long runs and have the proper mileage per week in your training.
