Maybe this post was created to stick it to the libs, or to shine a light on perceived hypocrisy, but renaming Yale is a discussion worth having. I say this as a Yale alum.
There is a problem with judging historical people and actions through the lens of today's morality. People do need to be judged within their times. Thomas Jefferson of course owned slaves, so today we would consider him a monster. But at the time he spoke out against the international slave trade and advocated gradual emancipation of domestic slaves (thanks Wikipedia) so he would have been a more moderate voice among his contemporaries.
Ultimately we need to recognize that people are flawed. Any great man or woman is also going to have their shortcomings, so we need to consider the good and the bad, within that person's proper historical context, in order to decide if the great deeds outweigh the flaws enough to justify the continued honor we give them.
On balance maybe you could argue continuing to honor Jefferson . Confederate generals? No, what are their great deeds? Elihu Yale? I'd love to hear the arguments on both sides, but let's hear the argument.
