I don’t think many people in track, regardless of how talented, compete for medals. It is the overall lifestyle, an opportunity to devote yourself to something that, while challenging, is nevertheless vastly more satisfying and meaningful than most other jobs. Which of us who love running would not accept seven 4th place finishes in the Olympics in exchange for the opportunity to be at that level? I know I would.
