Anthony Famiglietti finished less than 3 seconds back in his debut at the distance, despite running most of the race in no-man's land. He'd go on to run 3:35 and then in 2007 13:11 for 5km (6th fastest ever at the time), but never ran faster. Goucher also ran 13:10 (5th fastest ever) that same season.
Only Ritz would continue to improve, and he broke 13 in 2009 (12:56), along with Tegencamp (12:58) and Solinsky (12:56).
The US squad was legit back then. It's too bad none of them ever managed to pull out a good world championship or olympic placing. Rupp sits back in 8th all-time on the 5km lists behind all of them.
I still think Centro will end up the American record holder in the 5km by 2022. You heard it here first, folks.
I remember thinking it was just a year or two until the American elites were challenging the East Africans in every race. This was the high point of American distance on the track. 06-10 or so
