That won't work. You'd need law enforcement to request the data. On top of that, he's not accused of a crime to a level law enforcement would take the time to request the data.

In principal, you'd look at the tower records and sort of map it out. You'd have timestamps. The tower records might be a little fuzzy unless he went way, way off course taking the shortcut.

Or, he could produce the claimed GPS track....

As an attorney, I send subpoenas for cell records occasionally. I think it is likely that Rossi's carrier would still have the data if he had his phone on during the race. However, I think Rossi probably ran without his phone turned on so as to eliminate the possibility that the phone data could be used to prove he cheated.

Personally, I am convinced Rossi cheated to get his BQ based on the lack of photos of him running on the course (other than the finish line) and on his unbelievable time compared to his past results.

I think only the race director can resolve this situation. As others have suggested, the RD should tell Rossi he has 24-48 hours to prove he ran the race or face DQ. Rossi will not be able to prove it, and will justifiably be DQ'd. Nevertheless, Rossi will still tell anyone who will listen that he ran the race and earned his BQ, but just couldn't prove it (I forgot my phone/the battery went dead/forgot my watch/was in the portapotty when the photos were taken, etc). The RD isn't helping the situation by letting this drag out.

Most marathons (even bigger city marathons) have large sections of the course with virtually no "fans." Has someone already said exactly where all the photo points were on this course? To answer your question, yes. I know you consider yourself to have a sharp mind and intellect which you believe is superior to most others, but to think that no one would have thought of and answered that is beyond the realms of most peoples credibility, but obviously not yours. I wonder what he has to gain from admitting it, though. It seems most likely he gets DQ'd, keeps denying it, and waits until eventually everyone forgets about it.

I think you are giving him too much credit. If he hitched a ride to half way he could have easily qualified for Boston, and appeared in some photos. I can't imagine he was anticipating an investigation into his cell tower pings.

This. Many others have eluded to it but you don't just accidentally pop-off a 30min PR in a qualifying race, even if somehow it was physiologically possible to do so. And anyone that has run marathons knows that it isn't. Your body doesn't just suddenly metabolize energy and oxygen 15%-20% better than the day or week before. I mean, just the increase in foot strikes from 3:40 to 3:11 would be rough on your feet over 3hrs if you weren't used to it. In summary, none of the details in this guy's story are gonna make sense because it's a blatant fabrication.

The clincher for non-running types that can't differentiate the other lies should be the fact that the guy broadcasts all his racing and training exploits but running back-to-back PRs in the half on the way to his qualifier didn't garner a mention. There's no way this goes un-trumpeted by a jagger like this dude.

Plus in those temps his start would have been faster than his finish (true in most marathons, but especially the temps that day). His body would think he was starting a 5k (faster than any one he'd ever previously run) as opposed to a marathon. What would be the estimated min/m, under 7:00?
