Calvin and Tucker and Lars r gonna rock the cream at the national sensation
And Sophomore phenom Noah as well will also rock the cream obviously... at the national sensation
Fair or not, much the trash talk about Power is because he’s a polarizing figure for both the Oles and the rest of the conference.
Many alumni were upset he got the XC job after being hired as the sprint coach. That was a desirable job and many Minnesota high school and MIAC coaches had expected to be in the running. He also barely seems to recruit Minnesotans and was central to the State Meet moving. That hasn’t endeared him to any of those coaches. The fact that the man looks like he has never run a step in his life doesn’t help contentions from coaches that eat, breathe, & sleep distance running.
Since getting the job Power has has some success but it is fair to say others do less with more. Look at Scholastica, Concordia, and Macalester. All three ran school record DMR’s last night and don’t have the resources St. Olaf does. Not to mention the recent Ole success coincided with a down period for the conference on a national level and the departure of the Tommies.
His ego in turning away runners who score for other MIAC teams obviously contributes to the hatred. So, it’s a combination of his own hubris and rival jealousies but it makes for entertaining content.
I guess I don’t understand why any D3 team wouldn’t allow anyone on the team. Seems like an enrollment boost to me. A decade ago the Oles had 70 men on their XC roster.
You clearly have never talked to Power if you think he has any sort of ego. Bro is one of the most selfless, kind, and humble individuals. He truly cares so much about providing the best experience for his athletes. Things he gets clowned on here for really should be a source of praise. Taking athletes to Boston, trying to build fast heats at home, getting runners into fast heats, etc., all demonstrate the effort he is willing to put in to get his athletes to run fast and have fun.
Sure, many were initially upset that he took over the distance role, but I am not sure there is any basis for ridiculing his competency as a distance coach after the results of the last few years. Continued development of both top and bottom end performers isn't luck. Also saying Phil had anything more than an incredibly minimal impact on guys like Will Kelly is just a lie.
Give the man a break. He has completely revitalized a program that was once stagnating.
To summarize - "Wahhhhhh"
If you think Power doesn't eat, sleep, and breathe running, you've never spoken to him. He ran 4 years in college and has been coaching ever since.
If you don't think Phil or Ricks have also been controversial figures in the past, you clearly don't know what you're talking about. I remember Rick's laying on the track, screaming his head off, demanding the 4x4 be reseeded at a meet a few years back.
Is Power a dork? Of course. He's a MIAC coach; if he took himself too seriously, he would be kidding himself. What examples of this supposed hubris do you have? His teams win, and he fights for his guys; what else do you want?
I do not understand this "do more with less" mentality. We've all got zero scholarships, dogsh*t athletics facilities, minimal budgets, and absurd tuition bills. Olaf has a kick-ass culture, dudes who are bought in, and a coach who knows what he's doing. On the mens side (women still run the MIAC obv) is doing "more" with "less". They've won the last couple XC confrence championships and doubled every other distance crews points indoor this year. Just sounds like an excuse for other schools weak culture and slow teams.
In conclusion, its Minnesota D3 running you chump. Put up or shut up.
DMR last night was crazy. Scholastica doping regiment is out of this world
Lars warmed up with a Cool Mint in, but he transitioned to a Cinnamon for strides once he put the spikes on. Then, while on the line, he pulls a menthol out of his headband! It was indeed a thing of beauty. He finishes his leg, and the coach slaps him on the ass and hands him a nice citrus pouch while he watches Boone run 4:06.
Boone was a little more consistent. He shotgunned two Hams in the team camps, then packed a lip of Copenhagen Long Cut for the warmup. Stayed clean for the race and then, upon finishing, remarked, "Oh dang bud that was a good one eh" to the utterly befuddled UC Santa Cruz guy standing next to him. He then pounded three more hams and promptly left for his beer league curling match.
Don’t forget about Tucker “Tuckman” Wallin. Dude was ripping darts the whole drive down from Duluth and polished off a pitcher of Margaritas during the warmup before ripping a massive 1:53 8-hundo. Dude deserves an incredible amount of props for that performance
Looks like Power's mom found Letsrun. Quality Scholastica content though.
Obviously a big-time DMR from Duluthers. Cal was bumped to 23rd in the mile, but it's possible he'll still make it with scratches. I was a little surprised he didn't race today.
Tommy ran down Lelinga in an exciting preview of the Outdoor championship. Will the seasoned vet be able to hold off the hard charging and uber-talented freshman? The Augsburg duo had a nice day too.
Kelly held on in the 5K. Bet Power was sweating after seeing the Tufts results this morning.
Can Bethel rally enough points to podium for both genders?

In the depths of LetsRun, a user did dwell,
updaterofthings, oh, what a sad, sorry shell!
Obsessed with Olaf's Oles, he'd rant and he'd rave,
But his own running prowess? Just a pitiful wave.
Dreaming of glory, of Coach Power's embrace,
But his legs were too slow, his pace a disgrace.
Recruitment passed him by, a cruel twist of fate,
Now he mocks from the sidelines, consumed by hate.
Oh, updaterofthings, with your bitter disdain,
Your keyboard bravado, your attempts all in vain.
Mocking the team, the coach, with venom so vile,
But your own lack of speed, it's not worth a smile.
Your jealousy burns like a fire so bright,
But your words only echo your pitiful plight.
A troll of the forums, with nothing to show,
Updaterofthings, you're just a sad little foe.
So type on, dear updater, with your keyboard of spite,
But know in your heart, you're a sad sorry sight.
Mocked and derided, by those who see clear,
updaterofthings, lost in your own fear.
The Boone CS. Kelly debate is a good one. Calvin is ranked higher in his best individual event but only had one MIAC title. Kelly had the conference record in the 5000m, but Scholastica arguably doesn’t set shatter the MIAC DMR record without Calvin in the anchor leg. I’d say they tie. It’s crazy to think a guy that wins two MIAC titles like Tommy is a reasonable third in the rankings.
This also makes me realize how loaded the sophomore class is. I think you could argue Turlington higher but Bati’s upside keeps him higher for now.
Calvin Boone seems like such a cool guy! I noticed him at MIACs chatting in large groups of runners from many different schools when he wasn't busy trying to score all of Scholastica's points. He clearly was able to command their respect!
As for Lars DeWall, that guy seems to know how to have a good time. His smile really warms the soul! These two will definitely be missed after this year. Good luck to them at nationals!
I even saw him talking to Power. Probably his act of charity for the month.
Calm down, small fry; attending Macalester doesn't make you superior to the rest of the MIAC
the hater bit is only funny if you actually engage. Defend your positions coward

Dadgum bro cooked
Great run for Scholastica to reset the MIAC All-Time record. Boone runs a 4:05.19, the fastest split of the day.
Power's race plan fails Kelly for his third consecutive national meet.
Why take away from the terrific Scholastica run with that crummy comment? Congrats to Saints. Way to put your mark on the MIAC just a few years in. Can’t wait to see what they do Outdoor.
As for Kelly, I’d much rather be 14th in the country than sitting at home typing toxic nonsense on letsrun.
Huge props to the saints, they were absolutely brilliant. Hopefully they can build on this and begin to challenge Northfield supremacy in distance even after Boone and Lars leave. As for Kelly, I don't think people could have reasonably expected much more from him. He was only 3 seconds off his PR, and placed above his seed. I bet he would've lapped updaterofthings 4 times in that race.
