This is the classic definition of a unilateral contract.
They put an offer out there with the terms: time deadline, performance required, reward.
No notice of acceptance is required for unilateral contracts. Performance would constitute acceptance.
I would be very careful dispensing legal advice . . . if Mike did in fact run a 20m 5k within the time period, and the Brojos refused to pay like you say, it is possible that they would be in breach and have to pay the original reward plus other damages. This is by no means as cut and dry as you suggest.
