This is a tangent, but my god, there are finisher's medals for 5ks now? I don't even know how to respond to that. I guess I know why the registration fee for my local 5k is creeping over $40.

To BQ with a 3:25 he needs to be at 7:49 pace. At this point he's nearly 30 seconds per mile off pace, but considers himself to be "not far from another BQ!"
He needed to be 2:25:45 to be on BQ pace - almost 9 minutes off pace. He would need to run the last 7.5+ miles in 6:40 pace to BQ at that point.
Alas, "Then, around mile 22 I had to use the bathroom…and that crushed any chance of a BQ. Bummer :("
If not for having to use the loo, he would have had ANOTHER BQ.

A friend today called and asked me what I've been up to. I said not much, "I've been too busy reading about this 3:11 marathon cheat." He said, "How can there be thousands of posts" about it? I said it's just interesting.
I mean the guy's blog is a gold mine. In Philly, yeah, he was close to qualifying. No he was 27 SECONDS PER MILE BEHIND PACE AT 30K.
The problem is the average joe doesn't get what 27 seconds per mile is like. I think the bets way to explain it someone is 30 second per mile is roughly the difference between a pro man and pro woman. It would be sort of like Caroline Rotich's coach saying at 30k she was in line to win the men's Boston marathon.

So he took a selfie before the race? If he did run the entire race, after he took the selfie, he would have either had to give his phone to someone before the gun went off, or carry it with him the entire 26.2 miles if he attended the event alone. Pictures show he didn't run with it secured to his arm, so it would have had to been in his pocket if he did have the phone with him. The race video and pictures aren't really clear as to if a phone is in his pocket. So...
1. If you did run the race Mike, who did you hand your phone to and is he/she willing to speak up on your behalf? (Isn't there a picture of him at the finish line at Lehigh with his finisher's medal - who took that pic?)
2. If you carried it with you, maybe there is something on your phone that would prove that you ran the entire 26.2 miles.
3. Or was the selfie story another fabrication?
Man, I would love to see his cell phone records during the time of the race. One call or text on that thing while he is supposed to be running... kaboom.
Great post my friend. Great post. So the guy ran the most amazing PR in the history of running while carrying a freaking cell phone in some manner (even if in a fanny pack). Laughable.

Thanks for posting this - pretty insightful. Thinks a 22+ 5k is "pretty decent" and apparently lost about the same time taking sh!t during a marathon that kept him from BQ'ing again.
Rojo it's not missing any part where he talks about his 3:11 because he never wrote about it. That's another piece of evidence to add to the growing pile of shit this guy has created for himself.

10.1 miles in 1:17.39 (7:39 pace) on 12/14
18.02 miles in 2:22:21 (7:54 pace) on 3/15
He talks about training hard and feeling good (On 50 whole miles a week!)
Neither one of these runs says you would be able to run a 3:11
Even if he kept same pace that he ran for the 10 miler he would be at 3:21 for the full marathon For the 18 miler it would be a 3:27 marathon. You can see he is already slowing down from 10 to 18 and it only gets slower the last 8 miles....

I dunno, sounds kinda sexist. Don't think it would play well in mainstream media. Need a better analogy.. something tying together time and distance.
But you are right, to the general public 30 sec/mile difference is negligible. They don't live their life at the same speed. It's 30 seconds! Big deal!

Firsttime, that is pure gold! I've just emailed the person who wrote the article which that video accompanied (Mr. Gary Blockus,
gblockus@mcall.com). I asked him if we could get ahold of the unedited video, and gave a quick summary of why we wanted it and the allegations against Mr. Rossi while I was at it.
We don't want to flood this guy with emails, but Rojo maybe if you emailed Mr. Blockus (or whoever else at The Morning Call you deem most relevant to getting the video) it would have some more weight.
I love the quote on his medal rack "Always Earned Never Given". True....so true....he earned that BQ.

Has anyone studied this picture from his blog archive? Probably...but I thought I'd ask again. It's clearly from his finish at the Lehigh Marathon. You can see his GPS watch on. I tried to zoom in on it to see if you could read it, but it's too low-res. Perhaps someone can pull a CSI "enhance!" on it.
anyhoo...fascinating thread. I haven't been this engrossed since the New Yorker article on Kip.

I must run Boston.
This is my new goal...no, it's my new committment.
I started running (seriously) just 16 months ago.
In that time I have completed three 5 Ks, one 5 miler, two 10 milers (Broad Street Run), 3 Half Marathons, and a full marathon.
This year I have 4 more 5Ks, 2 more halfs and 2 full marathons on the schedule.
I guess you can say I caught the running bug.
But the holy grail...the race of all races...the one I strive for, is...Boston.
I know it may be a little bit of a reach, to qualify for the world's greatest marathon in only my second year of running. But I am going to do whatever I can to qualify for the Boston Marathon.
For the next several months, I will be blogging about my training.
I hope to qualify for Boston at the VIA Marathon in the Lehigh Valley this September.
Until then I'll be keeping you updated on my races, my training, my diet and my state of mind.
Running a marathon is not easy. How may people do you know that have completed 26.2 miles?
Running the Boston Marathon is the ultimate.
I must run Boston.

Just a bit of sanity - if it was my watch, it would read the time of day because would have hit "stop" at the finish. That said the guy's a douche bag whether he cheated or not. (and I think he did)

Interesting. So, Mike had planned on getting a BQ at VIA at least by May, four months before the race. I wonder if he thought he could actually get that much faster in four months or if he planned to cheat all along. I'd lean towards the latter since the VIA just happens to have no mid-race timing mats, but that might have just been a bit of serendipity for old Mike as he realized in the lead up to the race that he was not even close to BQ shape.
