Ritz had his best years as a high schooler before he even knew who Salazar was. 12:56 and 2:07 was the absolute bare minimum for his talent level, he was going toe-to-toe with the Kenyans in cross country. If he was coming through today he would've run 13:20 in high school.
Mary Cain was 8th at the world championships at the age of 17. She was an Ingebrigtsen/Ryun/Decker/Budd level talent. It is absolutely criminal what he did to her and her career, regardless of what your feelings are on her as an adult.
Her parents deserve the real blame. If they were involved, invested, and cared about her well being and were willing to tell her "no" then they would have looked more closely and seen a situation they hadn't prepared her for at all. I don't love Salazar in the least, but it was his program to run at the behest of his employer. Salazar and Nike certainly could (and should) have screened her for psychological fit for what they asked of her, like a NFL team with a prospective draftee.
Edna Kiplagat’s longevity is insane! World marathon major podium at 44 years old. Crazy to think she medaled at world junior championships 28 years ago. She has been a world class runner longer than most her competition has been alive.
Why is it that Hellen Obiri speaks perfect english but MLB latino baseball players who have lived in the states for 15 years need an interpreter?

You ignored her peer. Mary Cain is close in age to Ajee Wilson. Mary Cain should not have been converted to a 1500m/5000m runner so soon. Mary Cain was an 800m/1500m runner.
Talking about one of the all time great Marathon coaches, who won the most famous Boston marathon in history, on a thread about the Boston Marathon is "irrelevant?" fascinating.
idea
pick one of these million threads about Salazar and move over there

Salazar IS Boston and Boston IS Alberto. He's an American running folk hero.

I get this take but that doesn't mean Salazar isn't at fault for being a bad coach for her. It more absolves her of any blame for choosing him (which I think is a fair point, 17yo kids aren't exactly known for making good decisions). There's a reason why they can't vote, drink, buy a gun, or any number of other things.
Ordered Sling tv 20 bucks just in time to watch the race Lemmu was not going to be caught and Obiri poured it on in the last mile you can’t let that happen if you are a gal and running to win you got to get that kick out of her 6 miles out Great victories none of them surprising
I consider myself a fan of the sport, but sometimes I feel like the only people who know less about the athletes than I do are the broadcasters. And I don’t know much. In my fantasy world, BAA would pay a researcher to create updated bios for the elite field. A lot of that information could come from a questionnaire that athletes their agents would have to complete as a condition of acceptance into the race, and could include some details about how their race prep went, where and how they trained, their background, goals for the race and the year ahead, etc. Maybe even a few softer details about who they are – like stuff about their family, what racing here means to them, etc. That information would be augmented by other published information, like past results and pre-race interviews. A version could be posted online and the broadcasters would have something to talk about...if there was any time after the wheelchair coverage.
