SEC is slow wrote:
Some info from the super sprint conference, the SEC. Auburn was 10th at the SEC conference XC meet after finishing 8th at the indoor NCAA track meet in the spring. Check out their published recruit info.
Greetings and thank you for your interest in the Auburn Track and Field/Cross Country program. We encourage you to
browse our website and online media guide for information about our program. Please be sure to review our scholarship and walk-on standards listed below. Athletes interested in cross country will be evaluated on their placing at the State Championships, Footlocker and Nike Regional and National competitions. Each year there is a limited number of roster spots and scholarships available and the competition for these scholarships is very tough. If you have met the walk-on or scholarship standards we encourage you to contact us.

575 Pectol, Wesley 3:48.82 Mar 23, 2018

A 4:16 1600, their absolute bare minimum walk-on standard, equates to around 3:59 for 1500. By that logic, 66% of their 1500m roster is too slow to walk on to the team as a high schooler.
A 4:10 1600, their minimum threshold for ANY kind of athletic scholarship, equates to around 3:53 for 1500. By that logic, at least 4 of the 12 athletes who ran a 1500 for Auburn last spring should be receiving some form of athletic scholarship.
A 4:04 1600, their full ride threshold, equates to a 3:47 1500, a mark which was achieved by only one of their athletes last outdoor season.
For the sake of argument, let's say that partial scholarships begin at 5% (0.05), with an even increase leading up to the 3:47 mark, which is 100% (1.0). The gulf between the minimum and maximum gives us a 1% increase on athletic scholarship per 0.6 seconds dropped below 3:53. So then we roughly have:
146 Curles, Wesley 3:45.15 (1.0)
575 Pectol, Wesley 3:48.82 (0.7)
675 Kipngetich, Silas 3:49.54 (0.7)
1252 Spieler, Jay 3:52.57 (0.06)
This means that Auburn, an SEC sprint powerhouse not known for distance AT ALL, could logically be awarding 2.46 of their 12.6 athletic scholarships to just their 1500 runners. It also means that over two thirds of their roster should not be allowed on the team based on their own HIGH SCHOOL walk-on standards.
