Like many of you, I have grown tired with reading the propaganda posted here pertaining to D1 scholarships. Somebody mentioned Michigan State in another thread as having easy walk-on standards so I decided to start with their roster as a factual piece of evidence about how loaded P5 teams really are. The facts are that there are only 12.6 scholarships available. Most schools either don't have that many or they are withholding one for that absolute elite guy who comes knocking on their door. Some schools put their money into sprints (many of the SEC schools or Ohio State) or others put much it into distance (Iowa State or Wisconsin). But they still only have a maximum of 12.6. Getting back to Michigan State which has a decent distance program but not elite as they did not make it to nationals. They have a well balanced track program which means they put about 3.6 scholarships into distance, leaving 9 or so for sprints, jumps, throws, and hurdles. I listed their distance roster by best HS PRs that I found in Milesplit. We all know that not all meets make it into Milesplit so their PRs could be even better than listed. I stacked the roster by value and assigned estimated scholarship amount. Scholarships run out at 1:55. 4:15, and 9:15. 9 minute guys get about 50% and a 4:09 got 25%. So for you who think that 9:20 gets a full ride in P5 country, it may get you a walk-on spot if you are lucky like the 10 guys at Michigan State in that category. There really are no full rides unless you are an 8:45 or 4 flat guy. I didn't mean to confuse too many people with the facts.
