Think about it, every non-disabled teen male you know - whether they work out or not is somewhat fast (15.0 100m) or somewhat strong (150 bench) in some way even without any training. I am pretty sure I don’t know one male in their teens or 20s who couldn’t hit at least one of those standards apart from maybe the horribly obese, but even then they would excel with strength.
But pretty much 80% of 60 year olds I know are pathetically weak and slow to the point where I would be surprised if they could bench half of their body weight or run a sub 19.0 100m (these are about the starting points of most geezers that come into my PT gym so I have to assume it is around the population average) and even the ones who work out regularly and look pretty fit/trained can only do something like a 75-80% bw max and 16.5 100m and that is somewhat trained. Any 20 year old male doing the equivalent training would easily be benching 1.5x bw and running 13s.
Those untrained 20 year old male standards above, are probably what a geezer would have to spend about 4-5 years of training to achieve (IF they ever get there) but yet 14 year old dudes can do it off no other training than playing video games all day.
I would absolutely hate to be 60+. The average geezer would probably top out his genetic potential at a 6:20 mile, 150 bench and most could probably hit about 15-16s in an all out trained 100 with years of training. Those are all standards I could hit within 2 weeks of getting in shape from being a lifelong sedentary (minus the 6:20 which took me about 4 months). I know chicks that have been gym bunnies for years and find those above standards hard, it sucks that geezers have to work so hard to be so weak and slow. It takes them much longer than teens to get fit, that is just a fact.
I just don’t understand why from a biologocal view, being even relatively strong or fast is SO HARD for most geezers? Not a dig at them but it must really be a patience tester working really hard in the gym just for weak absolute strength or weak absolute speed. It might be considered strong WITHIN THEIR AGE but when faced with real danger such as a knife chase or coming into contact with an aggresive animal, even a fitness-trained geezer wouldn’t fare well (unless he had skill-specific training).
Obviously there are a few geezers who can kick my big stupid butt, you know, the ones who represent the typical 60 year old.. but most couldn’t even match a non-trained teen with years of training unless they have some kind of natural talent.
As time goes by and you approach age 60, my friend, you will have three choices:
1 die
2 become a 60 year old who is not interested in fitness
3 become a 60 year old who is interested in fitness
Number 3 is the least sucky choice here

I'm 73 and 165 pounds. After reading this I was curious about how many proper push ups I can still manage. I did 25. They were slow, chest to the ground and arms then locked straight up. In other words not half-ass push ups. At the gym today I did 3 sets of 8 flys at 160 lbs and 3 sets of 10 bench presses at 120 lbs. They were on the machines so I imagine the weight would have been less if they were free weights. So I know I'm not especially strong, but the the two guys I run with (both 66 years old are strong.) One of them does sets of bench presses at 220 lbs. We still train at 9:30-10:00 pace. Well, they do, I've been out for the last month with a knee injury. I don't think it sucks to be a 60+ year old who is into fitness. It beats hanging out at the local donut shop. Besides I've been at it for 50 years, though never hardcore like my two running friends. They're serious.

That's because they are not aerobically trained. Put them through 8 weeks of aerobic fitness training and then 90% of all abled bodied persons will be aerobically fit -be able to run 5 miles in 50 minutes or less.
The body quickly loses what it doesn't need. The reverse is true. Think an arm in a cast and an arm lifting a weight. This is why I believe that aging is not what is commonly believed. Health and fitness can go up and up well into the 80's., provided proper maintenance and repair.

So.
Even if you are going to the gym, you are not aggressively attacking the weights or the bike or whatever you do, you just do something.
And then, if you do get aggressive, you lack the hormones and other stuff for recovery, so you will be sore and maybe pick up an injury and say to yourself I will never do that again.
I am not there, because I know this, and I still have two years before hell.

Concerning fitness and aging: A long-term study of weightlifters found that their ability to lift declined only slightly with age, but their perceived level of effort to lift increased significantly. To me, that study showed two things.
1. We can slow the loss of fitness with age by continued exercise.
2. We need to lift with more effort than ever as we get older.
One of the great things about fitness is there is always something new you can do to set lifetime PBs and to stay enthused about exercise.
For example, one of the ten events in the Nashville Fit Games last year was the vertical jump. I trained for it and increased from a beginning level of 12" to 15.5" to win the vertical jump competition in the 60+ division. This year, my best vertical so far is 20" and the competition is still a month away. Of course, NFL combine guys are jumping 40" so this is nothing in open competition.

No way in hell. I bet 90% will struggle to run 2 mile in 10 min pace. Think about how . many people are lugging around 50lbs+. They aren't losing that in 8 weeks. Show up at your local 5k race and see how many people who choose to run struggle to break 30 mins. Then realize these are the fit examples.
A lot of people also don't seem to understand the decline with aging. It is one thing to be a fit 50 year old. Another to be a fit 60 year old. And a fit 70 year. Age group records are far from perfect but lets look at the 5000m

I run every day and lift most days.
