Nate Jenkins returns to Marathon

I always admire Nate before but have to agree that the blog entry makes him sound insane.

If your friend is delirious and near passed out, how about you get yourself together and slow jog to get help?! Not race home and practically pass out yourself. Or how about you train within your means and not nearly kill your friend and self?

If he makes it to the Boston start line healthy then I will be amazed. The blog

post did him no favors.

Wow, you're not very clever are you? Obviously Nate is smart enough to know that this is a competitive advantage and doesn't need the rest of the top marathoners out there realizing that this is a great way to train his body to be more efficient at marathon pace. Making it look like it was a mistake is just one of the things that makes Nate so much smarter than people like you.

You criticize me for not reading the lines but you aren't able to read between the lines.

Was cutting the workout short also part of his devious plan to keep the world's 2:05 marathoners in the dark?

why are people acting like Nate didn't have a seven year coordination issue that kept him from marathoning instead of "supposed overtraining?" and to save the next rebuttal, that was due to a herniated disc and bad posture rather than overtraining. Nate actually understands marathon training, but god forbid we have someone who can run proper time progressions up to the marathon instead of another 27:4x 10km crawling home in 2:12-2:14. but yes, shame on him for being completely open with his thought process and training because it threatens the normative american marathon model.

The intelligent posters aren't commenting in the binary way you say they are. They're rooting for Jenkins and are aware of his accomplishments on limited talent. But they're also aware it's been more than seven years since his last good marathon, that he seems to spend a lot of time thinking about things he can't control, and that, a la the six pieces of toast bit, he has a history of being his own worst enemy.

I think Nate enjoys the planning and process of training more than racing. Nothing wrong with that.

I really don't understand why more people haven't realized that depriving your body (within reason) of fuel before selected workouts is the ideal way to trigger a response from the body to burn a better ratio of fat to glycogen. Nate is generous enough to hint at this in his posts for those of us who know how to interpret what he writes, but the rest of the fools just think he's a dummy who forgot to eat.

Marathon running is all about getting to the finish line before the tank hits empty. Yes, Nate had to cut this workout short and things don't always go perfectly, but the logic and method is sound.

If he hadn't been been dealing with the coordination issue during his prime marathon years, I can almost guarantee that Nate would have run under 2:10 by now.

While I don't think he's trying to deceive people with his training blog, this is very true as you can find numerous Canova schedules for his Italian marathoners where they would only be allowed to eat carrots or some other form of vegetables between workouts in a special/specific block to create the effect of depletion. Moreover, Canova also has long tempo runs where the goal is to effectively bonk a few km before the finish to teach the body to consume glycogen more conservatively at marathon pace or very close to. To run a marathon properly you have to teach the body how to go through roughly 90 mins worth of glycogen in a little over two hours (rather than figuring out how to use gels/caloric drinks better). Without training that specifically targets this transformation, you see Western runners with marathon bests incredibly disproportionate to their track pedigrees.

Nate trains like an idiot. More does not mean better. That double 10k workout depletion was retarded. no wonder he has been injured so badly.

To bump up this thread, it appears as though there's a chance Nate may not race Boston. More coordination issues and a foot injury have set him back.

Doobey, no way Nate ever would have run under 2:10 for a full marathon, no way, no how.

Definitely did not work out the way he hoped. Clearly the injury problems cropped up.

This guy must have known something.

Great guy, really appreciate him posting all of his work outs, blogs etc. but he really over estimated his fitness. That first 15K at 5:12 pace did him in. Should have started at 5:20 pace, anything around 2:20 would have been great for him.

I think the biggest take away from this, for both Nate and others in his situation, is that his loss of coordination is not 100% fixed and is less likely to caused by poor posture/ thoracic disk herniation. Something else has to be contributing to it. ?

I just checked his training blog-no update. Any idea what happened?

Sorry to everyone for falling so far short today. Struggled pretty early on. Was hurting real good by 15 or so miles. For some reason it seemed like a good idea to stop for a moment at 19 miles when I did I passed out for a moment and some nice spectators took me to the medicaltent and my day was over. No serious issues to worry about. Just a bad day. Again sorry to let you all down and thank you so much for the support.
