Yeah, this is not an NSA investigation. If the race investigators had that type of power and reach then they'd just subpoena his cell phone records and essentially have GPS tracking of where he was at every moment via the cell towers he was in range of. Obviously they can't get that information for anything less than a felony criminal investigation.

Found my photo. I was right around a 7:15-7:20 pace for the first 18 miles or so. This was along the river on the Lehigh Trail before Bethlehem. He's gotta be around me somewhere, +/- a minute worth of pictures.

Agreed - it's hard for him to come up with a storyline for the 22-24 miles of the race he didn't run. Would be interesting to listen in on the RD's questions to him:
RD: What was your approximate split at the halfway mark? The big race clock was easy to spot so surely you can recall it.
MR: Correct, I put everything into this one race and actually ran hard unlike the other 20 I've run, including the 5ks.
RD: Do you remember seeing any photographers along the course? They were stationed at multiple locations on the course.
MR: Trust me, I looked for them. For some reason they were all bunched at the finish line only. I can't speak for the 1,200 others who were able to get a picture taken.
RD: Can you show me your GPS watch splits? Given this was the race of your life, it should be saved.
MR: Yes, I've always been an Eagles fan. My letter was only released to close FB friends, it was never meant to go viral.
RD: Can you offer any proof that you ran the whole course without cutting?
MR: I was awarded a BQ time, what other proof do you need?

Do you know of this happening? I know some runners who have run obscure marathons with dumb RDs who had to wait an extra week for the BAA to officially tell them they were in (presumably because the BAA was looking into the results) but have runners actually been denied entry to Boston?

Only if you define "around" you "somewhere" as including the parking lot near the last exchange zone and find a picture of a guy eating a bear claw and drinking a caramel macchiato while hiding in a car.

Why should a Race Director's burden of proof to DQ a runner be greater than the state's in a criminal trial? A guy gets accused of cheating, and by coincidence his time at Boston is 50 minutes slower than his qualifier. By coincidence, nothing in his limited < 2 years racing past would indicate the remote possibility of him being able to run a 3:11 marathon, on a hot day no less. By coincidence, the same guy who uses GPS for his races and training runs doesn't use it on the day of the greatest race of his life, even though he's wearing it. By coincidence, a guy who loves to yak about all of his races, posting times and multiple pics after each race, barely says a thing about a HUGE marathon PR and BQ. By coincidence, a guy who likes to make short films about his races doesn't take (or have someone film) even one second of video of himself during the race. By coincidence, a guy who wears clothes to call attention to himself during his races (flag shirt at Philly; Go Mike shirt at Boston; BAA shirts at just about every other damn race), wears a grey shirt, black shorts and black hat (which is a perfect ensemble to wear while running 26.2 miles on a hot, sunny day) for his miracle BQ race. By coincidence, the guy posts multiple pictures of himself in different BAA shirts and jackets before ever running Boston, showing a clear obsession with the race. Then by coincidence, not one picture is taken of this same guy by the official race photographers during the race, even though there are multiple photographs of EVERY OTHER RUNNER on different parts of the course.
As they say, if there are too many coincidences, it isn't a coincidence.
Because, if I am the race director and I'm about to disqualify someone of the caliber of person that Mike Rossi has proven himself to be, then I am going to be absolutely certain that I won't wind up in a court of law as a result of taking an action which, and again I can't stress this enough, is a largely symbolic disqualification. There is not a single course of action that can be taken against MR that will un-run the 2015 Boston Marathon for him.

Hate to admit it, but there is a bit of Schadenfreude in me right know. Didn't like from the get go that he dragged the schools principal into the mud for something that "accidentally" went viral. Give me a break, the letter was intended to be a self advertisement the entire time. Too bad you had to cheat to teach your kids a valuable lesson. If he kept is mouth shot , nothing would have happened but as usual, narcissistic cheaters have to let the whole world know how awesome they are. He's gonna get a lot of heat for this, and unfortunately his children who are just innocent bystanders will suffer the most.

He must have figured he needed to be careful and resist blogging or FBing while having to wait for all those slow souls to slave away for 26 miles. After driving to the parking lot he probably browsed his blog for any comments, then his FB page for any comments, ESPN, then his blog for any comments, then his blog for any comments... He had 3 hrs to think twice about his actions. My bet is he walked back onto the race course hiding his bib.. faked a calf pull while a few more runners came by and blended back in the race. My guess is he didn't think about the GPS situation. He got in his car and it probably stopped due to autopause. He turned it off figuring he could do the math using the time of day. He didn't want to miss the BQ time so he freaked out and got back on the course earlier than needed. Could you imagine all the stress? We really should let him be ;)

Not a legal type and not familiar with Boston's bylaws, but even though he did run the course in 4:01 last month, he allegedly got in under false pretenses. So it's not unreasonable to presume that Boston could DQ him and send him a letter. They'll never get that finisher medal back.
