40 degrees, even low 30s, with rain is some of the best conditions to run in.

I did some of my marathon workouts this past fall in the cold and wind and Struggled to hold any decent pace. A few times I underdressed and just came apart once I got cold i bet i slowed down 30 seconds per mile. My shoulders and arms just stiffened up and my legs felt like logs. I can’t imagine trying to run low 5 minute pace when you get that cold and wet. I think after about 1 hour you would just start to stiffen up no matter how fit you were. I’m sure Matt will come back and run a fast time with better weather.

are Hoka shoes any good?

Hey congrats!!! Solid effort. Still boggles my mind how well you ran NYC, it is a tough and hilly course... Tokyo, London or Berlin in ideal conditions with your current level of fitness you can definitely go sub-2:40!!!

Wouldn't you rather run in the Olympics than run sub 2:10 and never run in the Olympics?!

i'm guessing Chris Solinsky would rather have raced in the olympics than be a 12:55 guy with no olympics. i'm also guessing everyone who meets him asks him if he ran in the olympics, not what his 5,000m PB is.

This has been studied endlessly, and studies quoted often after Boston, glycogen burn rates radically increase the closer you get to freezing temps and when the body starts shivering, like say from rainfall directly stealing all the heat from your skin, it really becomes a serious problem

It would be interesting to know what the sub2:10 people were taking maurten, etc. it may have made all the difference in time.

I rewatched the race broadcast, specifically when Osako dropped out around 30K. He was shivering like crazy, likely hypothermic based on observed symptoms. Some earlier posters claim it was great weather to run fast. Maybe for some, not for all. Llano toughed it out to a subpar performance, but unless he went out way to fast, he likely was hypothermic as he claimed, Osako dropped. If he can recover fast enough maybe take a shot at London or Boston. Something Llano maybe should have thought of (Boston at least).

Too bad there's no fabric on earth that accounts for physical events in crummy weather.

Everyone responds differently to cold, rainy conditions.

Same as how some people simply can't tolerate high humidity no matter how hard they train.

Birhanu Legese nearly PR'ed because he likes these conditions. Others like Suguru Osako had to quit.

It's in your genes. Some people are heat intolerant, and others are cold intolerant. I am a humidity intolerant, cold-loving guy who's pretty sure about this (it runs in my family too).

This is the worst advice I have ever witnessed.

You can train to be a good heat runner. You can train to be a good runner in the cold. You can train to be a good runner in humidity. The human body adapts.

If you are a runner that jumps on the treadmill when it is below 40 and rain you will suck at racing in the rain.

The race reminded me of Boston where the weather eventually won and here it did against most as well.

I'm blown away the men's winner ran 2:04.

Stop trolling. It doesn't have to be anywhere near freezing for you to get hypothermia, especially if it's windy and you are wet. People routinely die from exposure in the 50s and even sometimes the 60s or 70s. Someone with the body fat of an elite marathoner could easily start experiencing the onset of hypothermia in as little as half an hour in 40 degree rain.
