I was a D1 runner that was marginalized by the female population at my school. I now realize that I should have quit the team to bring attention to my plight and the plight of my fellow athlete-virgins.

Can the students yell "Send them back to Africa?" Build a boat, let 'em float!!!!
I think the part of the reason this thread is getting so much attention is because we have someone so outraged at somone saying "Build a wall"..Perfect example of a liberaltard..thinks free speech only is free when its a subject they care about..I think her perspective is warped and selfish..How about getting offended about something significant like Hunger or Jobs or Violence..No we have to pull a hissy fit over "Build a Wall"..Grow up!!
Who is paying her entry fees and transportation to meets?
This is about safety for minorities? No its not..This is about You and others who don't like the message or the idea of free speech when its an idea you don't support...Build a Wall isn't hate speech..Its because Americans have experienced a flood of latino illegal immigrants..pure and simple..I applaud Cornell's stand..Hope they don't back down..

Forcibly deporting anyone with African ancestry is 10,000x more despicable than merely building a wall to prevent illegal immigration. How can you even compare the two? I'm about as liberal as it gets when it comes to immigration, but even I can admit that there are legitimate, non-racist reasons why people would advocate stricter regulation of the current flow of immigration from Mexico. Merely advocating for such does not constitute an attack on Latino people.

You seem like an abject dickhead.
That said while the behavior of the build the wall crowd is boorish, just posting a sign on a bulletin board is protected by free speech and the college was probably okay not to take any disciplinary action. But some of the alleged subsequent activities appear to cross the line from boorishness to harassment and intimidation, and if they are drinking or drunk behind the wheel. Well that's against the law. Isn't it? Or does that not apply to college football players.
And this woman has every right to use her free speech and not compete for the college.
Some of you guys here are such complete idiots. I laugh at your face.

Exactly! And the fact that these fine young football players decided to yell "build a wall" at Americans who happen to be Latino has nothing to do with racism. It's an expression of solidarity, really. Like, "Illegal immigration is a problem, but just because you look like you might be an illegal immigrant doesn't mean we will shun you and refuse to have a thoughtful policy discussion with you from the safety of our vehicle after a few beers."
I can kind of see where both sides have a point here. Writing "Build a Wall" on school property was obviously in poor taste, but I think this would be protected under free speech, but the university could have, and should have addressed it. Just because I have free speech doesn't mean I can go into my work and start spouting off about my political beliefs. Illegal? No. Ill-advised and subject to possible disciplinary action? Yes. Based upon the incident afterward, it looks like the message was not necessarily about illegal immigrants, but was directed at people *on campus*. I think the school should have just painted over it and gone on. Their inaction seems to be what led to the escalation.
Where the line was crossed is when the football players directly harassed the other students. In the immortal words of Dean Wormer, "Drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son."
So there doesn't appear to be a government actor involved in this situation, so what right to free speech are you referencing? I'll let that sink in for a second.... what you are actually complaining about is the free market of ideas... Where market forces decide what ideas are trash and what ideas are acceptable... Her idea that they are racist, their idea about the wall, the colleges comments, our responses... All examples of this exchange... Don't you find it ironic, that you, a presumed conservative, are attempting to stifle this free market exchange? perhaps these are too difficult of questions, given that you thought this was the Ivy League Cornell...

I think she'd probably be very flattered if the school ran for her.
or, just being as-holes.

once again "free speech" a right no one here is questioning is brought up rather than the issue of racism/xenophobia
This sounds like an epic troll job. Somebody trolled "Build a wall", the usual offended suspects overreacted, and the drunk football players made a distasteful joke out of the troll job. Now, we have rampant racism and bigotry running the halls of academia. Kids, you can't make this stuff up.
complicated issue, awkward for the school to handle for sure. The only incident that really crossed the line was the football players harassing Latino students.
I dislike Trump as much as the next person, but we can't live in a society where writing "Trump 2016" is considered a micro-aggression.

How is screaming "build a wall" at Latin-American women racist? I don't see anything that would suggest racial animosity playing a factor here; it's just a wall. Are ceilings and floors racist too? These football players were just voicing their support for an important, constitutionally responsible plan to build a gigantic, mindbogglingly expensive barrier over mountains and desert in order to protect the rule of law in America. I highly doubt they have any issue with Hispanics who are here legally.
It's like screaming "ban muslims" to an Arab-American. Just because they are Arab doesn't necessarily mean they are Muslim, so there is really nothing to get upset about. Why do these sensitive minorities always assume they are being "targeted" instead of constructively engaged in democratic conversation?
The amount of stupidity on this thread is astronomical.
And by stupid, I mean by the aforementioned quote. Y'all need to get out under your rocks
Unless of course that was just extreme sarcasm - I'll just assume so. You can't be that dumb, right?

It's clear people with this kind of a username making posts like this are open minded and willing to discuss their opinions with others even when they do not agree. Someone like this definitely would not resort to name calling when they do not agree with someone.

Asks the white male.

In seriousness, I don't really understand all the students who are lashing out at their universities over the actions of fellow students. It seems that her issue is with the students who were saying these things, not with the institution. If someone says something offensive while I'm walking around town, I don't expect city council to do something about it. Nor do I expect my university to react to a disagreement between myself and another student. We're all adults. We don't need the school to play the role of mommy and daddy.
