Is 2:05:59 a 2:05 guy? If so, that's 4:48/mile pace. AlSal said Rupp did a 20-miler at 4:52 pace and his HR never got above 149. If true, yeah, Rupp has a 2:05 in him.

Rupp's 10000 is worth 2:04-high, and Rupp shows every sign of being as talented at the marathon as for 10000, so if anything AlSal is being conservative. Rupp's OT performance was worth a 2:08 (thats 2:09 for Meb) and he made it look like a training run. I'll give him 2:06 shape right now and 2:04 within 3/years.

I posted under another name on letsrun saying Rupp should stick to the 5k/10k. My reasoning was his 5k/10k performances, combined with his 3:50 mile speed, indicated Rupp would be idiotic to move up to the marathon.

Following your U.S. marathon trials in warm weather I have to reassess. I was wrong and deserve the idiot label myself for underestimating Rupp. Very impressed with Rupps performance. In a future cool weather marathon Rupp will run 2:05. You are an idiot if you don't see that.

salazar definitely could have run a 205.

his training was a real issue.

the oregon burn out program plus his mad ideas nearly killed him.

he brought his B game to the table.

his running form was destroyed into a kind of marathon shuffle. bad bad bad. missing was cross training, massage, speed drills for correct form...

but he took notes and learned and is now a pretty good coach.

I agree. Rupp could potentially go sub-2:05, especially when you consider there are races where quite a few guys stay on that pace or faster so he wouldn't be out there alone.

He also does not have as many injuries as Ritz

that all depends on whether or not galen rupp is suited to marathon running,and even whether he likes the event.just because hes a top class 5'000'10'000 metre runner is no guarentee he'll be a top class marathoner.many make the transition,but not everyone.

Rupp's PR was from a time trial set up specifically for him with a rabbit that took him through something like 7km. Ritz's PR came in a negative split championship race. Not a fair comparison. If Brussels had held a 10k that year, I'm fairly certain he would have run under 27 minutes.

That is right. Their ceiling is exactly 15 seconds different and using Ritz's soft PR is not a good argument.

Yeah, because nobody can comfortably run 20 miles at marathon pace.

Idiot. Al Sal was one of the most efficient runners Jack Daniels ever had tested. Good looking running form means jack sh|t in the marathon.

The only bragging rights I have at this moment is the fact that I have had the Galen Rupp's name behind mine in a race result for 1 Mile back in 2006 which was probably one of if not his worst running season sense his birth. With this being said the way in which Rupp run's and how fluid his form is I think his Coach Salazar is right and wrong I believe he is right about how much potential Rupp still has with this being said and the way in which he ran the trials and the fact that his stride did not labor one bit I think he is a future 2:03 guy or faster!

Maybe he thinks Rupp will run a wind-aided Boston Marathon some day.

ritz never maximized in a marathon due to cramping or fueling issues for whatever reason. still, 38 seconds faster at 10k for Rupp, x4 and you get 2:32. Subtract that from 2:07:47 and you get 2:05:15. If you assume Ritz would have run 26:59 in good weather if he'd had a chance after the world's that year (instead of running world half), then you have 2:06:47.

Ritz is a 2:07 guy and Meb is a 2:08 guy. Absolutely agree that neither are near that level. They have been there and Rupp will run faster than both of them. No question.
