Indoor world's just don't have the same status as an outdoor title. Honestly you might as well chase records indoors as they will last a long time. No one remembers indoor medalist. Chase records indoors, win titles outdoors.

In response to the person posting about Rupps lack of tweeting. Does Rupp have Marshawn Lynch syndrome? Does not feel comfortable being the center of attention?

This is a positive development for the sport of track and field. This is also a smart move for Galen Rupp.

Re: the sport--

There is nothing more boring and more damaging to the appeal of our sport (other than drugs, of course) than one star athlete chasing a record in a totally set up race. That is not competition. It has no drama. It has no appeal to anyone but the most hard core stat-oriented fans. Doing it without any coverage just makes it even worse. If we ever seriously want to grow the appeal of track, that is the kind of garbage we have to dispose of.

Re: Galen Rupp--

For Galen to become both more successful and more popular, he needs to come down from the ivory tower. Get in more real races and show everyone he's the best on a consistent basis. Don't be afraid to mix it up, maybe even risk losing once in a blue moon. Be willing to toe the line when every condition isn't absolutely perfect. And do it when and where people are watching. It's called sports. You aren't supposed to script it. That's why they run the races.

I don't care for this decision and hope it wasn't this message board which prompted Rupp to go after a meaningless win rather than a historical WR/AR. Everyone would remember 3 AR's in three attempts in 2014 for decades to come if Rupp had done it. No one will remember this race.

According to what/who? Everyone I know sees indoors as just the same as outdoors. In fact, I can recall more of the indoor championship podium finishes than I can the outdoor ones. You really think no one remembers El G, Geb, both Bekeles, and Lagat winning medals at world indoors?

In a literal sense the answer is no. Surely some people remember such races.

In a more general sense the answer is yes. Far, far more people remember outdoor titles. Even the semi-casual fan at least has an idea of the number and distances of the outdoor titles of El G, Geb, KB, Farah... On the other hand, the semi-casual fan is not even sure if these folks raced indoors.

What the true track fan should appreciate here is the absolute poise of Alberto Salazar, who has the presence of mind to not get greedy when it would be so easy to do so. Rupp already has two American records this season. It would be infinitely better for his confidence and his career to show up at worlds. You think if he medals (or dare I say, wins) he'll look back and say: "yeah that's great and all but I really wish I had went for that mile record."

The guy might be the best runner on the planet right now. Very few who could hang with him at the moment and he wants to prove it. Salazar wants to prove it, rather than use up gas and emotional energy chasing an AR in an off event which he might not even get! Think about how deflating it would be for him to miss the record. He has incredible momentum right now and it would be a mistake to risk breaking it. Salazar knows it and this is why his athletes are the best in the world.

You're making things up. A semi-casual fan really doesn't know that these guys raced at the world indoor championship meet? Who are these "far, far, far" more people who only remember outdoor titles? Where did you get this number?

It's obvious that Prince Rupp's already peaked. Coach SillyBar has seen to that. Great post-race workouts do not a record breaking champion make. Why run Rupp ragged after his record breaking efforts... unless you're after a BIG (short term) personal ego boost? Lydiard always said you have to protect your delicate condition. Many an athlete has left it all out on the track in a workout and blown his/her chances at the true goa(s)l. Congrats SillyBar, you made a rookie mistake with one of your crown jewels.

Hope someone holds on further. I see no reason to throw away a record attempt because someone may challenge you. If we want the most exciting sport, Rupp faces his attempt WITH a challenge.
