I should make it clear that my PhD is in law, not medicine. The articles referred to have been produced in conjunction with the relevant medical experts. However, on my reading of the literature, and our discussion with the experts, it is clear that each exposure to an anaphylactic reaction increases the sensitivity of the system to the introduction of further allergens. Obviously a subsequent attack can always be more serious than the last.
I would recommend contacting Dr Richard Pumphrey in the UK. He is the specialist referred to in our article, and he was most helpful to us in responding to our enquiries. His current contact details can be found on any web search. It is obviously important to identify the cause of such attacks.
Best wishes,
Bob
Giles,
I knew all four guys, Andy, Bruce, Ed, and Tom Dowling, Maxwell, Bob Hersey—all long-time, well-trained runners who dropped dead.
On the other hand I ran a road race today in Winchester, MA and saw 5 guys with whom I raced in the 1960s.

I met and had breakfast with Jim Fixx when he was going around the country in the late 70's doing those promotions for Quaker Oats Cereal, 10k races. After a Quakers Oats 10k race in Griffith Park, L.A. they had picnic tables lined up and the runners who wanted to stick around could have a bowl of cereal and talk with Jim Fixx. He was a humble and nice guy. I sat next to him during the breakfast.

The other guy I was trying to remember was Ed Sheehan - ran 1:08 at Bar Harbor.
Strangely, all three guys I've mentioned: Andy Palmer(48), Bruce Ellis(30's) and Ed Sheehan (47), were top three at least once at the Bar Harbor Half Marathon...
I never met Bruce, but the other two guys were really good people. And fit beyond anything I could ever have dreamed of...

All top runner fanatics in great shape with New England connections. Is this freaky?
Also, the first three did not procreate.
Al has kids but
Did Jim Fixx have kids...
That's a pretty narrow profile:
*New England raised
*47-48 years old
*active runners
*very competitive in their youths
*many, many 100 mile weeks logged
many of these deaths are due to steroids and HGH. don't be like lance armstrong and barry bonds. it's russian roulette.
Add Jeff Drenth to the list of elites who died early from heart disease.
Yes, Fixx had a son, at least. Jim used to call me for shoes for himself and son when I worked for a running shoe company.
I remember being on some panel with Fixx after his book came out. He was nervous to be on with a "real" runner and expected me to attack him for being slow but I didn't was supportive of his good work. I had the impression that he felt like an impostor. So maybe he was unduly stressed.
I knew all those guys well and yes, they were driven, but so were lots of other guys who aren't dead or had heart attacks. I doubt if you could cause a heart condition by training hard as you could, say a stress fracture of the tibia.
Tom
Travis Landreth formerly of UConn died at 24 from a heart condition I believe. He was training with the farm team out in Palo Alto when it happened.
I miss Jim Fixx. What an exceptional writer. I miss Sheehan, too.
