After a 5:11 23rd mile, we are down to 2 in the women's race.

Check that. Yalemzerf Yehualaw is now all alone in the women's race. Defending champ Joyciline Jepkosegei is in 2nd. Yehualaw set a debut record in her first marathon and may become the youngest London winner in her 2nd.

Women's race heating up

Sutume Kebede is the woman pushing the pace right now in the women's race. She was the runner-up in Seoul in April in 2:18:12. Best finish in a major was 3rd in Tokyo in 2020. Mile 18 was 5:08 -- the fastest of the race except for the downhill 3rd mile -- but still seven women in lead group.

Men are 14:42 at 5k. It's the six 2:03 men plus Ethiopia's Leul Gebrisilase (who was not on the website as an entrant earlier this week). His pb is 2:04:12.

That's 2:04:21 pace, which is a little on the slow side considering the first 5k is downhill. The pacers are aiming for 61:45 at halfway so they'll need to pick it up a bit.

Third 5k is slowest of race for women

Each 5k split for the women has gotten slower. 16:01, then 16:17, and now 16:33. They're 48:51 at 15k, which means they're now on 2:17:25 pace slower than women's-only WR pace.

The Kenyan pacer, Beatrice Mutai, was struggling and has already dropped out. The other pacer, Gete Alemayehu, is still there but obviously she's slowing.

Yehualaw has been right on the pacers the entire time and looks full of run, but the lead group is still 8 women.

32:18 at 10k for women's leaders

Eight women in the lead group through 10k in London, they come through in 32:18 (16:01-16:17). Reminder that the first 5k is downhill. That's 2:16:15 pace. Yalemzerf Yehualaw, Joyciline Jepkosgei, Ashete Bekere, Joan Melly, Judith Korir, Sutume Kebede, Alemu Megertu, and Hiwot Gebrekidan comprise the lead pack.
