2018 Camel City Elite: Edward Cheserek Runs 3:53 on a Flat Track, Paul Chelimo Wins $10,000 and Rachel Schneider Wins Even More ($12,000)

by LetsRun.com
February 3, 2018

For the second week in a row, the amazing Edward Cheserek ran an incredibly fast mile indoors, clocking 3:53.85 to crush the field in the Camel City Mile. Cheserek now holds the #1 and #2 times in the world in 2018, and what’s most amazing is not how fast Cheserek has run, but how much faster he could potentially go. Cheserek’s 3:54.73 last week came at 5,300 feet of elevation in Albuquerque. His 3:53.85 today came on a flat track in Winston-Salem, N.C., and was the second-fastest indoor mile ever run on a 200-meter flat track according to Jesse Squire.

UPDATE: As Dan Lilot points out, O’Mara’s top time on a 200-meter flat track was actually 3:52.30.

With up $9,000 on the line if the winner could break Matthew Centrowitz’s 3:54.02 facility record, Cheserek wanted a fast pace and got it, hitting 409 in 57.9 and 809 in 1:55.6. At that point, only the Nike Oregon Project’s Craig Engels was close to Cheserek and he would soon fade too, leaving Cheserek alone to chase the time. Cheserek continued to press, but even he could not maintain the merciless pace and began to tire, hitting 1209 in 2:54 (still an incredibly fast time). He closed it out with a 59-second final 400 to stop the clock at 3:53.85 and claim all $9,000 of the prize money put up by JDL Fast Track owner David Shannon.

Engels came up well short in his bid to hit the World Indoor standard of 3:55.00, fading to fourth place in 3:58.81 as Paul Chelimo, who was doubling back from a victory in the 3k less than an hour earlier, broke 4:00 for the first time in his life (officially) in running 3:58.59 for second. Chelimo actually wound up making even more money than Cheserek today as he won $6,000 for winning the 3k and $4,000 for second in the mile to give him $10,000 for the day.

Neither of them could claim top earner honors, however. On the women’s side, Rachel Schneider made $12,000 in the span of 40 minutes by pulling off an incredible double, winning the 3k in 9:02.64 and the mile in 4:31.74.

We recap the other elite events for you quickly below in the order that they took place (the men’s mile was last).

Men’s 3000

Olympic 5000 silver medallist Paul Chelimo got the win as expected in 7:52.88, just ahead of Izaic Yorks who ran 7:53.54. Chelimo ran 7:45 to win this race last year but was saving energy so he could double back in the mile a little less than an hour later.

Women’s 800

Former Virginia Tech star Hanna Green, a three-time NCAA runner-up, got the win over Sweden’s Hanna Hemansson in 2:02.58 to Hermansson’s 2:02.98. D3 star Emily Richards, who has a 2:00.62 outdoor pb, only ran 2:07.46. Believe it or not, that appears to be an indoor pb for her as last year her best indoor time was 2:08.83.
