Currently I live in Columbus, Ohio and I make 116k a year. I'm a software engineer. I have an offer for 150k for doing basically the same thing in Los Angeles, however I've never been there. The weather definitely appeals to me, as does all the opportunity for outdoor sports, be it running or cycling or just on the beach.
So what do the LRC faithful think? Is LA worth it and is it affordable at 150k?
I am going to make a move from Central Ohio to Southern California soon too.
You won't be able to buy the same type house there of course, but people go there for the weather. If your office is anywhere close to Santa Monica, I suggest renting a place (even if it's an apartment) there...nice areas in Santa Monica for about as cheap as you can get in any desirable place in the area. I also really like Burbank, but it is more expensive and possibly further away...but it could be closer depending on where you will work.
Most people don't regret moving to LA...BUT it can be smoggy, you will deal with earthquakes and potentially fire and mudslides and potential for drought. I'm sure you know all that though.
If you do take the job, enjoy!
