I run the mile and 2 mile and ran 2 sec off my 2 mile PR at the second meet of the season in high 10:40s. I went out in 40 which was like 5m behind everybody since hsers love to go out in 34 and run 11:30. Anyway I went negative and ran a few 81-83 and then began to cut down lap 6. Closed in 70. Only problem I see with this strategy of working from the back is I have to go around all the scrubs and go out to lane 2 occasionally. Other than that it’s smarter than going out at 5:00 pace. I was sitting by a teammate’s mom afterwards and she was b!tching at me about how I raced saying “you’ve gotta get in the race” and “your coaches never teach you all to sprint” (her kid is a 100-400 guy). I want to tell her, “oh how I’d love to run 9:30 but I’m not exactly there, would you like to try out your master plan and report back?” I don’t need some mom who hasn’t run in 20 years tell me to run the 2 mile when she hasn’t run further than a lap
