I have been running since November 2017. Yesterday, I finished my first marathon at Disney World with a time of 4:07. I did not know what to expect, this being my first marathon. That said, I am a Type A personality, and I was disappointed with the result. Now, I’m wondering what I can do to improve.
More background: I’m 33 years old. I am 5’10” and weigh 155 pounds. For this marathon, I used Hal Higdon’s Intermediate 2 plan. This plan had me averaging about 35 miles per week, with a couple peak weeks of 50 miles. During my training, I completed three 20 mile long runs. Honestly, I do not feel like this prepared me for the very tough final leg of the race (especially with the high heat and humidity yesterday at Disney). I have never set foot on a track or done any speedwork to speak of. Most of the time, I eat healthy. Although I could clean my diet up a bit more.
Questions:
1. When can/should I run another marathon? I was thinking about trying in June.
2. Would it be possible for someone like me to qualify for Boston? If so, what is a realistic timeline.
3. What training plan do you recommend for my next race? I am a lawyer, so my work schedule is sometimes hectic. Yet, I’m willing to put in the effort and make the necessary schedule adjustments.
I have read these message boards before, and I know that I am likely to get flamed. Hopefully, though, I will receive some constructive answers.
P.S. My background is as a golfer. So, yes, I’m a “hobby jogger” at this point. But I want to change that.
