I'm relatively inexperienced on the track, and looking for some tactical advice.
I ran an indoor 1000m race (my first). It started out slow (first lap 38), and by the 2nd lap I was completely boxed in. I was on the inside against the rail and I had 2 guys in front of me, and 1 guy to my right. I hung in this pack for laps 2 and 3, but then I couldn't take it any more, they were slowing me down a lot.
I could not go around them with this guy on my right, so at the start of lap 4 I squeezed between the two guys in front of me which required making some significant contact. Finally I was free and I caught up to the leader as the bell rung for the final lap. I pulled away for the win with a final lap of 32 and a 3:03 finish. (Nothing remarkable, but not terrible for a 36 year old man)
After the race an official came up to me and said "if you push like that again you're gonna get DQ'd". So my question is how to handle a situation where you're completely boxed in and being slowed down dramatically?
