Answer: when his dad chemically neutered him!
I hear Man in the Mirror on the radio more than any other MJ song. The Smooth Criminal video is just as iconic as Billie Jean, Thriller, Beat It. They made a Sega Genesis game and it was covered by Alien Ant Farm. MJ was the original Super Bowl half time show in 93. He was still god back then.

Nice shoutout to Weird Al. Let us all take a moment to appreciate him and his career, which has extended far above and beyond almost all of the people he has parodied.
It could reasonably be said that Jackson was John the Baptist to Weird Al's Jesus.
Eat it, MJ fans!
SAlly V wrote: It is not him becoming a freak. It is him becoming a serial homosexual pedophile. That is the most disturbing part. He paid one family $20 million after he molested their kid. Michael Jackson is about as bad as John Wayne Gacy was. Gacy murdered his victims. Michael just repeatedly molested them. Not sure which was worse.
1. Homosexual makes it worse, huh? So a heterosexual serial pedophile is okay or somehow not as bad?
2. Bold moral choice, by the way, coming out against pedophilia. Thanks for stepping up and taking a stand.
3. $20 million settlement isn't evidence of guilt. It's evidence of having money to make problems go away. Look up the Chandler family. Dad was crazy.
4. Jackson acted wrong with kids, no doubt...sleeping in same bed, holding hands, mannequins and paintings, etc. but what evidence is there that he molested kids?
5. You don't know who was worse between John Wayne Gacy and Michael Jackson? Well, let's see if this helps: one murdered 30+ people and the other didn't.
Getting back to the OP... looking at that slide show, I'd say it was around 85-86 when he really started looking like a freak. And History in 95 was last album any good.

Like, when did the press start turning against him? When did his skin become noticeably lighter? When did he show all the signs of eccentricity?
When he began using Emmanuel Lewis to sit in his lap, thus covering the vitiligo spotted erection.

"The Way You Make Me Feel" is the best song on the album and certainly has stood the test of time.
There aren't any good songs on the album, and no, it hasn't. When people think of 80's Jackson, they think of Thriller, Billie Jean, Beat it, and maybe We are the World.
When the classic rock radio plays Def Leppard, it's nearly always Rock of Ages or Photograph. Nothing else makes the cut. Hysteria sold more copies and had more hits than Pyromania, but they all sucked. It was all MTV marketing, just like "Bad."
So you don't know anything about Def Leppard either.

Exactly. The classic rock stations I listen to rarely play those two songs. Of course they may be played all the time in another area of the country. I was just down south in Mississippi and Louisiana and the classic rock stations there were playing different songs than the ones in Ohio.

From that link it looks like it started in 1980. In 79 he looked like he did in previous years. Than it looked like a change in 80 and it got progressivly worse.
Definitely started having some stuff done around 1980, but the jump to looking alien was 97.
Looks like post 78. So stange, great looking black guy in 78, tries to undo all ethnicity from his looks from then on and ends up looking like an ugly alien in 97.
The Challenger Disaster in 1986.
NO ONE was the same after that.

Yeah I'm not sure why everyone seems to forget the guy was a pedophile. Louis CK is an animal for groping himself in front of women but Michael Jackson isn't for molesting multiple children? Weird effing world we live in.
Dude, get it straight - Louis CK forced women to see him MASTURBATING AND EJACULATING.
Freaking creep.

Louie C.K. didn’t “force” women to do anything. If he did, he would be in prison for kidnapping.
Michael Jackson used his mega celebrity status and his age to lure boys into sleepovers.
Why were there no GIRLS who accused Jackson of anything?

Those that had the "operation" in ancient Italy (1600s) were called castrati. They had whole choirs of them in the Catholic church.
That sorta thing screws with your mind cuz you know you'll never screw a woman or develop adult male features.
Hey, that sounds like the average LRC guy.
Don't forget the guy had both vitiligo and discoid lupus. He had to bleach his skin some because once the skin disorder spread he couldn't be black anymore, so he had to even out the dark spots left on his skin. Also, it's pretty clear the guy was accused of child molestation as an easy target for assholes who wanted money. Yeah, he was odd, but so are a lot of famous people. That doesn't mean he molested kids.

You can't win, I see right through to your bitter envy of my vast intellect. The more insults you resort to, the more I know you're suffering, and I get a kick out of it. Which there's nothing wrong with since you ask for it.
I did forget "Foolin," their other classic-rock standard, a genre which every idiot except you knows has always focused heavily on the time before Hysteria was released. Its listeners formed their musical taste in the 70's and they were too old for MTV's new era of one-song-album garbage.
It is universally said that his abusive father was a major problem for him and I'd think that his very, very early start in show business and the enormous success he enjoyed (I didn't realize that he was already singing for the group in the mid 1960s) played a role--they have destroyed many a child star in time. But the physical change begins to occur between 1979 and 1980 in that pictorial timeline. His skin begins to be lighter and by 1985 his nose is very different and he has a chimpanzee with him. So, look to that period of spectacular individual success as the tipping point. Even back in the day when the stories of him having sleepovers with boys came out, it was hard to believe that parents would let that happen, and that he was serially molesting them as appears to have been the case makes this a very sad story. Of course, it was even harder to believe that USA Gymnastics or USA Swimming would allow such things to go on for decades as well. Terrible.

You forgot Michael J Fox. There were 6 boys named Michael in my 6th grade class of 24 kids. I blame the 80s.

Lots of people have vilitago and all forms of lupus.
Wonder how many of these same people at 40 plus years old have Elementary school age boys (with ZERO girls) sleeping in their beds.
Enjoy your place on the Mehgen's Law website, Dirtbag Dirtball.
I'm surprised that a father of one of the many kids Jackson touched just didn't snap the skinny pedo's neck in half. Wouldn't take much effort.
Oh, well.....what common sense couldn't do, modern medicine stepped up to the plate and came through.
