I'm a 55 year old male who ran his first two marathons in August and September of 2018 using a 16 week Hal Higdon novice program which basically involved slow runs with just a few marathon pace runs, gradually building up to one long weekend run of 20 miles, two weeks before the race. Typical mileage was about 35 miles per week, no intervals, tempo runs, or hills. I decided I would like to go through a 10K training cycle over the fall and winter, just for variety, then go back to another marathon program and try to run a couple more marathons later in 2019. I found this eight week 10K program online followed it without missing a single day (thanks to the weather) from November through December and ran a 10K just ten days ago and my time was four minutes faster than my last 10K, this same time last year. It's encouraging that something is going right. I wonder if instead of searching for a new marathon program, this 10K program could be tweaked for marathon training. I really like the variety and challenge of the program. I've already started stretching out the long weekend runs to over 16 miles, trying to build up gradually to 20 miles or more. My weekly mileage with this program is 50-55 miles and I'm not sure with my age and lack of experience that more would be safe. Does anyone have ideas about what might be added, subtracted, altered to make this into a solid marathon training program, at about 55 miles/week?
